Solid wood, solid craftsmanship

Thomann 33 ¾ Europe Double Bass

In the mid-price range, the Thomann 33 3/4 Europe Double Bass stands out thanks to its solid wood construction - an uncommon feature where laminated models typically dominate. For bowed instruments, solid wood is renowned for delivering superior resonance, enhanced dynamics, and a tone that evolves and matures over time. Handcrafted in Europe by luthiers steeped in traditional expertise, this instrument is designed with attention to every detail. In keeping with classic tonewood combinations, it features a solid spruce top, solid maple back and sides, and a durable ebony fingerboard.

Body of the Thomann 33 ¾ Europe Double Bass

Crafted in the European tradition

The Thomann 33 3/4 Europe is inspired by double basses made in Saxony and Bohemia during the early 20th century. Its outline follows the viola da gamba shape typical of the region, with a flat back and purfling at the upper heel. The instrument is built entirely from solid tonewoods: Spruce for the soundboard, and maple for the back and sides. It features a 105cm scale length, corresponding to the widely used 3/4 size, and an ebony fingerboard that offers a smooth and robust playing surface. Each instrument is set up in the Thomann workshop, and string height adjustments can be requested. A set of versatile and durable strings is fitted as standard, making the instrument ready to play "out of the box".

Its broad tonal capabilities suit a variety of styles – from pizzicato-driven Jazz and Bluegrass to Classical bowing techniques – with the choice and positioning of strings playing a key role in tonal character. Whether used for practice, lessons, or live performance, this double bass will deliver consistent quality and irreproachable playability.

About Thomann string instruments

Thomann-brand instruments, which are exclusively built by renowned manufacturers, now constitute a large part of Thomann’s product range alongside numerous big-name brands. With unbeatable price-performance ratios, Thomann string instruments are the obvious first choice for students and beginners – and others too. The technical features and uncompromising sound quality they offer are usually reserved for much more expensive instruments found in the professional market segment.

Sized for adult players

With its 3/4 format, the Thomann 33 3/4 Europe belongs to the adult-size double bass category and is generally suited to players around 1.70m and taller. For those of shorter stature, a smaller size is typically more comfortable. While the bass's compact body can accommodate smaller students when the spike is fully retracted, hand reach may be limited. As with all bowed string instruments, selecting the correct size is essential for comfort and technique, and when in doubt, opting for a slightly smaller model is often the better choice.

Awsome for the price

Being a solid doublebass Im amazed with the sound you can get from it. I had the luck of living inm the city of one of the best doublebass luthiers. I must warn the new buyers that the bass came from factory still needs adjustments from a luthier to make it as comfortable as he can for your style of playing.Once that is done the instrument will sound amazing, perfect for begginers and intermidiates. I'm not a pro player so I wouldnt tell the difference with a 5000 + instruments, I jsut know this bass sounds superb!

Beware!
Anonymous 07.06.2016
This may be a 'fully carved' bass, but be advised it is not a very well carved bass. When I tried to amplify it (using piezo pickups of various makes) it immediately erupted into non-stop uncontrollable high-mid feedback.
I'm guessing the wood was carved by craftsmen and glued together by carpenters.
After several nightmare gigs I took it to a luthier who replaced the soundpost (It had the wrong guage post, in the wrong place!!!) and this helped a little with the feedback, but all-in-all this bass is still a lemon. Do yourself a favour and spend the extra ¤400 on a semi solid Czech bass. Buy one of these things only if you intend learning to play, on your own, quietly in your home. Otherwise avoid!

Thomann 33 3/4 Europe Double Bass!
Hélder Filipe 26.01.2014
The Thomann 33 3/4 Europe Double Bass is an instrument of robust construction fully carved. Simply adjust the easel as, replacing the ropes and have a good and reliable work partner for many years. I took the maximum potential of the instrument from a luthier Gabor Bolba . The sound of this instrument is brilliant, either with bow or pizzicato. It is a very good tool for the job due to his bow Harmonic top head be built in spruce, however is a hybrid instrument due to its round sound of pizzicato, has an excellent attack due to its harmonic bottom head to be right, has also a good sustain. The relationship between quality and price is very good. I am very pleased and highly recommend!
