Another solid portable recorder from Tascam
Having used numerous portable digital audio recorders since 2007, I can say there is no ideal portable recorder. You need to find the one that works best for you. In my case, the Tascam DR-100 MKIII came close. I used one for 10 years before some issues forced me to buy a replacement. I chose the Tascam FR-AV2, which is similar but less than half the size and without built in mics. The FR-AV2 does everything the DR-100 MKIII can do and then some, including the capability to record in 32bit float 192Khz file format and USB-C connectivity. There are also many features that make it useful for videography and filmmaking, like timecode sync and (optional) bluetooth remote operation. The main drawbacks for me come with the small form factor, where most functions need to be set with fairly small buttons on the top face. This can be tedious when working in the field, especially in fast paced or challenging conditions. There is a phone app that allows you to control the recorder but you need to purchase the bluetooth adapter at an additional cost. Otherwise this is a fairly capable and solid recording device, with plenty of options that allow it to be useful for many recording situations.
