The SSL 500 Series SiX Channel delivers a complete mono channel strip within the compact footprint of a single API 500 module, combining a fully featured microphone preamp, a two-band equaliser, and a compressor in one unit. Closely mirroring the module found in SSL's SiX desktop mixer, it is further enhanced by a switchable line or DI input, offering remarkable versatility in a minimum of space. This impressive concentration of its functionality is achieved through a carefully streamlined selection of parameters and SSL's renowned SuperAnalogue technology, which consistently applies cutting-edge analogue design in SMD format. Equally striking is the price: While SSL's classic offerings traditionally occupy the high-end segment, the SiX Channel, manufactured in China, brings authentic SSL sound within reach of everyday consumers, making professional-quality sound more accessible than ever.
The SSL SiX Channel offers a highly efficient yet remarkably complete mono channel strip in 500 module format, featuring a preamp capable of up to 72dB of gain with a low-cut filter, phase reversal, and phantom power. Alongside the rear mic input, the front panel provides a switchable line or DI input with 63 dB of gain, ensuring versatile connectivity. The two-band EQ covers high and low frequencies with ±15 dB of boost or cut, and each band can be switched between shelving and bell curves. While insertion points, centre frequencies, and EQ quality are fixed, they reflect decades of SSL expertise in filter design, guaranteeing that signature blend of precision and musicality. The compressor that follows is streamlined to the essentials, offering only a threshold control, while all other parameters are preset or automatically adjusted according to the input signal, with an LED traffic light providing clear monitoring of level reduction.
Thanks to its remarkably affordable price, the SiX Channel makes authentic SSL sound accessible even for home and project studios, while its compact format adds another significant advantage. This allows all the essentials for high-quality vocal and instrumental recordings to fit into minimal space, such as an API lunchbox, without compromising performance. Its open and neutral sonic character, a hallmark of SSL, provides virtually unlimited application possibilities, making the channel strip versatile across a wide range of sources. While professionals may still prefer the more advanced settings and routing options of larger SSL modules, the SiX Channel delivers outstanding results with comparatively simple means, standing out as an excellent choice with few true alternatives in its class.
Solid State Logic (SSL), is a renowned British manufacturer of high-end mixing consoles and hardware. It was founded in 1969 by Colin Sanders and is based in Begbroke, Oxfordshire. Initially the company developed transistors to control church organs, hence the name Solid State Logic. At the end of the 1970s they made huge advances in the domain of large mixing consoles with the 4000 series which pioneered the oncoming era of the ‘super’ consoles. Later, the 6000 and 9000 series also proved to be a great success and are still being used in countless recording studios all over the world. In 2005, Peter Gabriel and David Engelke took a majority stake in the company and then sold it to the Audiotonix Group in 2017.
With its compact design, comprehensive feature set, and attractive price point, the SSL SiX Channel stands out as a high-quality recording solution for studios with limited space or budget constraints. Multiple modules can be combined within a small footprint to create a powerful, well-equipped multi-channel front end, and when housed in a suitable enclosure, such as a portable 500 series lunchbox, an array of SiX Channels becomes an ideal solution for live recording. The unit also integrates seamlessly with other modules, including EQs or compressors of different designs, allowing the setup to be tailored or expanded with specific tonal options on a channel-by-channel basis as needed.
