The Shure PGA Drumkit 4 is a four-microphone close-mic package covering the core elements of a drum kit – kick, snare, and two toms – built entirely from the PG Alta dynamic microphone series. The PGA52 handles the kick drum, the PGA57 covers the snare, and two PGA56s take care of the toms, both mounted directly on the drums' rims via the AP56DM rim mounts included. Four 4.6m XLR cables and a carry case complete this ready-to-deploy dynamic microphone ensemble, with only stands for the kick and snare required separately. For drummers who want to add overhead coverage – for the cymbals in particular and the overal sound of the room – the Drumkit 6 extends the same foundation with two matched small-diaphragm PGA81 condensers.

A coherent ensemble
Each microphone in the Shure PGA Drumkit 4 has been selected for a specific role within the drumkit, combining purpose-designed frequency responses with the practical advantages of dynamic capsules, chief among them the ability to handle very high SPLs. The PGA52 is tuned for low-frequency clarity and beater attack, with a frequency response running from 50Hz to 12kHz and a swivel joint for precise beater-head placement. The PGA56 rim mounts position each tom mic directly above the drum head without requiring a separate stand, keeping the playing surface clear; the 50Hz–15kHz response captures the attack and body of tom hits with useful cardioid rejection of adjacent cymbals and drums. The PGA57 brings the same 50Hz–15kHz range to the snare with a presence lift through the upper midrange that adds crack and stick definition. All three operate without phantom power and connect directly to any XLR input.

Working drummer's kit
The Shure PGA Drumkit 4 is aimed at drummers and bands that need a practical, self-contained close-mic solution for live performance or rehearsal recording – without the overhead microphones that a full studio setup would typically add. The close-mic approach suits live environments particularly well: Overhead microphones can introduce unwanted room and PA bleed in smaller venues, so a well-placed set of close mics feeding the desk directly is often the cleaner solution. The all-dynamic signal chain also means no phantom power is required. One consideration worth noting is that without overheads, cymbal coverage depends entirely on bleed into the close mics – acceptable for live reinforcement, but something of a limitation for studio work. As such, the Drumkit 6 adds two PGA81 condenser overheads to the same foundation.

About Shure
