Bringing it all together

Drawing on the company's decades of experience and working with established musicians, in 2023 Selmer's specialists set themselves a lofty goal in designing the Supreme tenor sax: It was to be nothing less than the best tenor saxophone ever built, one that rises above every genre and adapts to any playing style, type of sound, and kind of music. To create such an instrument, the developers pursued a very particular synergy. The Selmer Supreme tenor sax takes on all the qualities of its predecessors, with contemporary features added on the strength of the latest findings in musical technology. As a result, the Supreme tenor outdoes its historic predecessors with regard to flexibility and ease of playing, and combines those qualities with the precision and accurate intonation of modern saxophones.

Tradition and technology

After a hundred years of innovation, design, and handcraft, Henri Selmer Paris has redefined the world of saxophone making once again. The neck bore on the Selmer Supreme tenor sax has been enlarged for strong projection, and the instrument has also been given a new tone-hole layout. The concentric three-point neck receiver can be adjusted to suit individual preferences. Ergonomic highlights include the directly coupled F/F-sharp linkage for the right hand, the mechanism for the left-hand little finger with its new articulated lever, and metal thumb rests for both hands. The octave mechanism runs especially quietly thanks to its Teflon bearings, and the leather pads are fitted with special rivetless resonators. This version comes with a matte finish and gold-lacquered keys.

For sax connoisseurs

The Selmer Supreme tenor saxophone is designed for established musicians and working professionals who expect the best from their instrument in terms of sound, playability, and looks. The reworked ergonomics make a real difference, especially in fast passages. The sound, meanwhile, is even more multifaceted and dynamic, and more direct at the same time. Players who choose this tenor benefit from its unparalleled flexibility, combined with genuine ease of playing. Just as convincing is the design, with its slender lines and softened angles. And, of course, the engraving adds to its elegance. With so many strong arguments in its favour, the fact that it comes with a Supreme case with backpack straps and a Selmer Concept mouthpiece with ligature and cap almost feels like a footnote.

About Selmer

Henri Selmer Paris, founded in 1885 by Henri Selmer – a clarinettist and graduate of the Paris Conservatoire – is a legendary French manufacturer of wind instruments. Initially producing clarinet mouthpieces, the company soon expanded to full clarinets and gained global recognition for its craftsmanship and quality. Selmer became particularly renowned for its saxophones, which have been favoured by countless jazz musicians since the 1920s. Beyond saxophones and clarinets, Selmer also crafts trumpets, trombones, and horns, continually refining its instruments through collaborations with leading musicians and the use of premium materials.

The message in the engraving

The Selmer Supreme tenor saxophone boasts an array of details that pay tribute to its legendary predecessors, and that includes its fine engraving, which is far more than just a trademark. In a sense, it puts the origin of sound itself centre stage, seen through the lens of the brand's philosophy. It starts with the floral design, which Selmer says stands for the house's long tradition. The cubes, meanwhile, illustrate the crystalline structure of the metal that plays such a decisive part in the instrument's sound. The cloud-like composition as a whole brings these two aspects together, and the fragments bursting out from it stand for the elements of air, movement, speed, and life. Finally, the disc in the background is meant to be read as a planet, reflecting the idea of infinite space. Who'd have thought a design philosophy could be visualised so effectively, and in such a small space?
