Much for money

Marc G., 19.10.2009
So at Presonus you get here a fully equipped tube channelstrip for good money.
A tube preamp, a super-fast compressor and a parametric EQ. Something like this costs considerably more for most manufacturers. And the studio channel sounds good. It gives the audio material the desired heat and volume.
I have recorded guitars and can only say that even with very strong compression, so if you flatten them right, they do not sound dead. Of course you have to think about what you want. Guitars already sound cooler if they still have dynamics.
I also recorded singing and can not say anything bad about the sound. However, very dynamic singing is something difficult to get to grips with. This has me wondered a bit, since the compressor can hit really hard if you want. Here is simply a little work, possibly also during the recording asked for.
Then I used the Studio Channel as an insert to mix a snare drum. This allowed the compressor to run off properly. After I had through the tube preamp already the impression that they had clearly gained in volume, I could show them with the compressor very controlled in the desired limits. Since the compressor has very fast attack times you can even make a snare completely flat or give her extreme punch. Besides, there is still the possibility to switch the EQ before or after the compressor, which is a matter of taste, and can give the snare skin. I switched the EQ before the compressor and then mixed a very short serve, then with a good reverb plugin, with short Decay, the snare reawakened to new life. And the Fetzt.
So in short: There are certainly also better channelstrips, but the costs at least twice as much and more.
I am absolutely satisfied with this device and can only recommend it. In this price class I know nothing comparable. And I've been looking for quite a long time. There is at most still the Envoice of Mindprint. The costs however around the 500EUR and is not sooo variably adjustable as the Presonus. The Envoice has a minimal better EQ, but that does not matter so much. The Presonus is also very good, but it has much ahead of the compressor of the Mindprint. Because this works only with preset presets, while the Studio Channel puts every important compressor function in the hands of the operator.

So much for my opinion and experience with this device. I hope it helps you!

Studio Channel: A price-performance monster

MIX, 11.12.2009
The Presonus Studio Channel runs primarily in our project studio and is mainly used for singing. The reason was that the Cubase's own editing capabilities are not so bad, but a hardware-sound solution promised sound profit. For this purpose, the device should function as a "switch" for samples:

From the one output to the Presonus Firepod interfaces and thus to the recording in the computer; From the other output into the live mixer for the room sound. This also works perfectly, and the singing sound has improved significantly, especially because a pressure-optimized compression could be achieved even in the sample context.

The device mainly includes a tube preamp, which is wonderful to regulate the saturation and is really capable of producing a very warm sound. It goes here to very extreme areas, which however then already have an effect character.

The Compressor is not more exciting, but practically designed and does its work without grumbling and, above all, definitely sounds better than the software plugins of Cubase. THAT is a real advantage. For the live sound (so) very good. It is important, however, that the Compressor for quality professional recordings should not be compared with the more expensive studio classics of the established manufacturers. The Studio Channel is a cheap device, but for its money but offers much.

We do not use the EQ section in studio mode. This works somehow intuitively through the Cubase's own sound control, which also allows a "graphical" control of the procedure. In pure live operation the intervention is worthwhile ...

Whether an analog level meter appeals, is certainly a matter of taste. I find the not so dolle, would rather have an LED chain with peak memory ... Pure optically, the effect is of course quite appealing ... At all, all the controls are quite clear and easily captured.

The processing does not show any defects.

In short: the device has only recently been in operation, but has fulfilled the expectations more than fulfilled. Above all, there is not much competition in this price class. For every small or project studio certainly worth a try. Studio professionals are going to grab other devices, but they also cost a few times.
