More pre-amp for money does not go!

JSchlomo, 01.04.2015
The Golden Age Pre-73 (of which I own two) has gotten competition - and that is not really from bad parents. Actually, I bought Fredenstein primarily out of curiosity because of necessity, because I simply wanted to know where the golden Fred is compared to the Golden Age.

Features and operation are almost identical, the Fredenstein brings a few plus points for less money: internal power supply, headphone jack, Lo Cut and a more handy format, which makes it really suitable for mobile standalone use. Hats off!

I have to admit that I have only used the VAS in a production. Vocal rather middle-thin rock vocals via SM7B. This needs always some dB more. So Gain properly upside down, played with the impedance selector (has paid off in this case), with the output control and voila: The vocals sound round, present, balanced and definitely rock. The Pre-73 very similar, perhaps a tacks present / nuclear.

By splitter I afterwards once again recorded the same voice recording with VAS and Pre-73 in parallel and the interplay between gain and output at both meticulously adjusted. Again, both sounded very similar to each other, but with longer listening, the VAS liked even better. Somehow he sounded more balanced and a touch of liveliness, the Pre-73 seemed a bit more reserved in comparison. What you like better, but is certainly also taste, the huge difference was definitely not.

Since the price has now been reduced again, one can only recommend an absolute purchase recommendation for the Fredenstein - which, by the way, is a very valuable and well-processed impression. All those who want to enrich the pre-amps of their interfaces to add a little color, character and va options, can hardly get more pre-amp for money. The Fredenstein is an excellent device at an incredible price.

Price performance super

03.09.2016
I was with the sound of my TLM 102 (Neumann)
Just not really satisfied. Too low, too little presence, too unbalanced. With the Fredenstein together it looks quite different. He does not do so much, but it just sounds more balanced and more present.

Above all, the Fredenstein makes really nice heights. The sound actually gets something noble.
Which then fits again to the design. Does not really matter to the thing but I find the small golden box also simply very beautiful.
Honestly, I find it a pity that Fredenstein does not have a (standalone) Micpre somewhere between 500 and 700 euros and vlt still has a tube in it.
I would have liked a "better" product from Fredenstein gestetst.

I have tested Fredenstein against the much more expensive Tonebeast and it was actually clear to me that vocals and guitar are better over Mic and Fredenstein than over the Tonebeast.

The very very good evaluation of mine depends of course on the price. Of course, there are preamps which sound much better, but then you have to either test a lot or switch to the 800+ price category.

I quote a friend who takes over Brauner, Chandler Germanium, ubk Fatso, Studerpult, etc:
"If you do not get a decent shot with the Neumann and Fredenstein, it is not due to micro and preamplifiers";)
