A.I. – Amp Intelligence

With the Reactor 50, Positive Grid has created a fully-fledged guitar combo that is designed significantly more along the lines of classic stage and studio amplifiers than the company's Spark models. The Reactor 50 is not simply a practice amp; instead, it features a sturdy wooden cabinet, a specially matched 12" speaker, and a traditional control panel with gain, three-band EQ, effects, and volume controls. Beneath this classic exterior, however, lies a modern modelling system powered by their new “Amp Intelligence” technology: Guitar sounds can be created not only via conventional presets, but also generated from text prompts, images, or audio clips. Despite its extensive feature set, operation remains pleasingly direct and closely follows the feel of a traditional guitar amplifier. The bundle also includes the matching Reactor Control footswitch, which provides direct physical access to key functions and makes the Reactor 50 even more flexible on stage and in rehearsals.

Real controls, no menu-diving

Despite being packed with modern modelling technology, the Positive Grid Reactor 50 remains straightforward to operate. On the amp itself, Positive Grid has opted for a classic top panel with familiar controls for gain, EQ, effects, and volume. The dedicated Amp control on the left allows direct switching between amplifier types, with the adjacent Push/Smooth and Heat switches further tweaking the sound. Presets, banks, and the tuner are also accessed via physical controls. In a live context in particular, though, the footpedal adds really intuitive hands-free operation – this is where the bundle with the Reactor Control comes into its own. The compact floor unit is designed so that many essential functions of the Reactor amp are available immediately, without the need for complex programming or menu navigation.

Freedom in a footswitch

The Reactor Control pedal operates the amp via six robust footswitches, whose functions depend on the selected operating mode. In Preset mode, players can quickly recall individual sounds and entire banks of presets as well as activate the effects loop, while Effect Toggle mode replicates the functions of a conventional pedalboard, allowing individual effects to be switched on and off within specific presets. An expression pedal can additionally be connected for use as a volume or wah pedal, or to control a range of other parameters in real time. In addition, sounds and signal chains can be edited conveniently using the accompanying Reactor app, which is also where users will find the unique “Amp Intelligence” feature, to turn ideas into sound using text, image, or audio prompts.

About Positive Grid

Positive Grid was founded in the Californian city of San Diego in 2013, and from the very beginning the company’s mission statement was to bridge the gap between mobile technologies such as smartphones, as well as the potential offered by the digital world, and the analogue feel of guitar and bass equipment. The company’s pursuit of this goal has produced a range of exciting products, the most significant of which is undoubtedly the award-winning BIAS FX 2 amp and effects modelling software platform. With its "Spark Amp" series, Positive Grid has combined the limitless possibilities that the digital world provides with conventional guitar and bass amplifiers. Positive Grid’s spirit of innovation and the speed with which new developments are produced is a clear indication of what this still relatively young company has in store for the future.

Powered by creativity

The Positive Grid Reactor 50 Control Bundle is most at home wherever guitarists need to switch between completely different sounds, and its switchable output power means that the amp can adapt to everything from low-volume home practice to louder environments like rehearsals and gigs. At the same time, the combination of classic amp controls and direct footswitch operation ensures seamless sound changes while playing – either wirelessly via Bluetooth or via the instrument cable the pedal comes with The USB-C interface allows ideas to be recorded or backing tracks to be played in, and players using external effects units or modelling boards benefit from the amp's effects loop and power amp input. The Reactor 50 will thus particularly appeal to guitarists who have to accommodate a myriad of different styles, such as those who play in cover/top 40 bands.
