Natural room acoustics
The HOFA Diffusor is a two-dimensional acoustically engineered diffusor designed to improve room acoustics wherever music is performed, played back, or recorded. Where a flat wall produces predictable reflections, the Diffusor's precisely calculated 2D surface scatters mid and upper-mid frequency reflections in multiple directions, reducing flutter echo and comb filtering without deadening the room. The result is a controlled, natural-sounding acoustic environment that allows instruments, voices, and loudspeakers to perform at their full sonic potential while reducing the colouration introduced by strong early reflections.

Construction and ethics
The HOFA Diffusor is manufactured in Germany in close collaboration with Lebenshilfe, a workshop employing people with disabilities. The natural version is made from untreated birch plywood, while coloured models are finished using a solvent-free stain. Its surface comprises 36 compartments of varying depth, creating different path lengths for reflected sound and scattering mid and upper-mid frequencies in multiple directions rather than returning them as a single coherent wavefront. Optional fabric covers are available separately to integrate the panels into different room designs without compromising their acoustic function. The Diffusor is also available in an Eco version for budget-conscious installations.

Diffusion versus absorption
HOFA Diffusors suit professional recording studios, control rooms, vocal booths, and music schools, as well as home studios, hi-fi listening rooms, home cinemas, and rehearsal spaces where acoustic accuracy matters. Unlike absorbers, diffusors do not remove acoustic energy from the room; they redistribute it. This preserves the liveliness and natural decay of the acoustic environment while eliminating the specific problems caused by discrete reflections. Diffusors are effective in the mid and upper-mid frequency range, but are not a solution for low-frequency problems such as room modes and bass build-up, which require dedicated absorbers and bass traps. The panels can be mounted on walls or ceilings depending on the room's acoustic requirements.

Developed in and for professional studios
The HOFA Diffusor was developed at one of Germany's largest recording studios and has already played a part in numerous award-winning music productions. The number of panels required and whether to combine them with absorbers and bass traps depends on the room's geometry, dimensions, and furnishings – HOFA recommends one to four panels for close-miking applications when recording individual instruments. For example, four panels can be arranged to form a larger QR (Quadratic Residue) diffusor with a point-symmetric surface – a configuration that extends the effective diffusion area and broadens the scattering pattern. The separately available HOFA Frame allows diffusors and absorbers to be swapped in and out of the same mounting position, enabling flexible room acoustic adjustment without permanent installation.
