The benchmark among loopers

The popularity of loopers has skyrocketed over the last few years, with musicians from all over the world using platforms like YouTube to showcase the impressive performances that can be put together using one. Boss has an immense wealth of experience in this field, and the industry standard for a long time has been the company's RC-1 model. This latest version of the pedal brings with it numerous upgrades, including enhanced control and clarity thanks to the innovative "Loop" LED indicator, while retaining the same intuitive footswitch-based operating principle that made its predecessor so popular. This combination together with up to 12 minutes' recording time means that the Boss RC-1 takes all the unnecessary hassle out of looping and gives the player unrestricted creative freedom.

Boss RC-1

For complete control

Boss's extensive range of pedals is ample testament to the fact that the company is not afraid to be colourful, and the RC-1 looper continues this trend with its bold red finish. Measuring 73 x 129 x 59mm, it also has the same footprint as Boss's other compact pedals and, just like its siblings, can be supplied with power via a 9V battery or an optional mains adapter. The RC-1 features a stereo input and output, each comprising a pair of 6.35mm mono jack sockets, making it suitable for use with keyboards as well as guitars and basses, and the footswitch serves as a control for all of the essential functions - including record, stop, playback, and overdub, and it can also be used to delete the last take or even entire loops. The new 24-segment LED indicator shows the current status of the operating modes (record, overdub, playback, etc.) and the speed at which it rotates corresponds to the length of the loop.

Ideal for solo artists

As mentioned above, the Boss RC-1's mono and stereo connectivity makes it ideal for use with numerous instruments, including guitars, basses, keyboards, and electric pianos, and it gives solo musicians everything they need to create a complete performance on their own - at home, on stage, or on YouTube - without any extra help. The RC-1 is also an ideal tool for musicians to jam and develop their ideas in complete freedom, and it will certainly find favour among users who value intuitive operation and are happy for their gear not to be dependent on WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity or on smartphones, and apps.

Boss RC-1 looper

About Boss

The Boss brand has been an important part of the Japanese Roland Corporation since the mid-1970s and has caused a sensation from its inception, especially with its compact effect pedals but also multi-effect units and other helpful tools for guitarists. The company's single effect pedals in particular are legendary and can be found in almost every guitarist's home. An incredible 15 million have been sold to date. With its Katana series, the manufacturer now also offers excellent amplifiers at a very interesting price point.

Always in the loop

Loopers like the latest version of the Boss RC-1 make it possible for a solo performer to conjure up the sound of an entire band, and video platforms like YouTube are packed with impressive (and inspiring) examples. Loopers can come in extremely useful in a variety of other ways, however: For example, a looper can be an extremely valuable tool for practising, in which case the player can record a short percussive loop to serve as a metronome or drum beat, thus reducing the amount of equipment they need. Musicians can also use recorded chord sequences to help improve their musical knowledge or as a backing track for improvising. These are just a few examples of how a looper like the Boss RC-1 can help musicians to practise and hone their craft more easily and effectively, but the possibilities are manifold.

Great looper that I use for practicing alone at home. One of the features that I love is visual display of the loop length which is extremely helpful, especially if you don't have any previous experience with looper pedal. Also the boss-style silent switch is great, since it doesn't make annoying click and is very easy to engage and disengage. Press once to start recording, press one more time to instantly overdub. There is an option to configure pedal to start the playback on the second tap without overdubbing, which might be useful for some players. The only caveat is that erasing the loop (hold the switch for a second) would initially playback around a second of recorded loop, which makes it not very usable in live situation, but external footswitch totally solves the problem. Looper stores in memory whatever you recorded on it even when turned off, but there is no option to store multiple loops and switch between them like using presets. Build quality is perfect like on any other Boss stompbox, it is very solid and feels like this pedal would perfectly work for ages without failing. There was no AC adapter included and I've never tried running it from batteries - I'm powering the pedal with my power supply and don't have any hum or noise issues. In overall, great and very easy to use looper for home practice, which can be extended for live situations with external footswitch.

An excellent basic looper!
Funeral Musician 23.01.2023
I have always loved the ingenious industrial design of the Boss compact pedals, first introduced back in 1977! Due to the way everything is laid out, the knobs are always protected from being accidentaly stepped on, and the pedal itself is large and really easy to press even with bare feet, which could never be said about the small round metal footswitches of most of its competitors. My first looper pedal was the original TC Electronic Ditto, and the footswitch was the primary reason I no longer have it. The pedal itself was smaller than the Boss, but a slightly increased size is a sacrifice I am more than willing to make for the sake of improved comfort. Also, the RC-1 has an extremely convenient round loop indicator which serves as a sort of progress bar of the loop, so you can always know when it is nearing the end and overdub it or simply turn it off at the right time. Lastly, I read the manual and discovered an amazing feature I did not even know the RC-1 had: apparently it can be set whether it goes right into the overdubbing mode when you press the pedal to stop the recording, or whether it just starts playing the recorded loop. I think, it is very convenient, especially for musicians who use multi-layered loops live.

Good basic looper!

This is a simple looper that you can use straight out of the box. You can layer multiple tracks to achieve a depth of sound. Solid pedal (like all BOSS pedals)
It's simplicity is probably also its drawback: you can only save the loop you last recorded and you have to get used to hitting the pedal at exactly the right time or a new layer will be out of sync.

If you want a looper to add a simple backing loop this is perfect. If you want a wall of sound that you can save and recall again you'll have to invest in something with more features.
