My 3-Year Journey with the DT Headphones
Let me tell you about my love-hate relationship with these Beyerdynamic headphones. I've been using them for about three years, and it's been quite the ride.
Let's talk about gaming first because that's where these headphones truly shine. People accuse me of using wall hacks because I hear them through walls and can track them. The sound positioning is that good. But here's the thing: once you step outside gaming, they're just... okay? The music experience is decent, but that treble can be pretty harsh. If you watch anime, be warned - high-pitched voices can be painful.
Now, comfort. Oh boy. Even after three years, I still wrestle with these daily. The clamping force at the beginning is no joke—imagine wearing a gentle vice around your head. I'm adjusting them as I write this review because they're bugging me. If you've used Sennheisers before, you'll feel the difference. The earcups, the weight, and the design never fully clicked with me.
Build quality? They're built like a tank... mostly. The headband on mine finally gave up the ghost, and now I'm facing a fun $40 replacement cost from Thomann (I live in the US).
Here's the thing, though—when I first got these, they were unmatched for competitive gaming. I've tried the fancy HD800s, the HD560s, and even the R70x, but these held their own. But if you're reading this in late 2024, I'd honestly point you toward the HD490. I've seen that it fixes everything I've complained about here.
Bottom line? If you don't want to splurge on the HD490s, these could be your jam if you're into competitive gaming and don't mind some comfort quirks. But for everyone else looking for an all-rounder for cheaper and potentially even better gaming performance, check out IEMS- (Fresh Reviews has good videos on this). However, you are set on headphones in this price range. The DT 900 Pro x gaming performance is stellar, but the comfort issues and so-so music performance make them a bit of a one-trick pony.
Quick hits: What I dig:
God-tier gaming audio (seriously, it's like legal wallhacks)
Built solid (except for that headband...)
Price isn't bad for what you get
What bugs me:
That treble can be rough on the ears
Never fully got comfortable
Replacement parts cost more than they should
Not great for much beyond gaming

Good sound, bad craftsmanship
Have no any complains on sound quality and neutrality. However, build quality... Have those quite expensive headphones less than a year, using only in home studio by myself and faux leather holding foam padding on headband already unglued, foam is loose. Made in Germany? It's just sad.

Really good except a teeny tiny design flaw
As an average audiothusiast, the sound output is superb with the low volume setting giving normal output sound even for being open cans. As such, it can be comfortably repurposed as a subwoofer for the times you just don't want to wear them.
Smooth sounding. Not terribly bass-y which I like. Cushion ear padding and being detachable makes it great for cleaning and long use which I find true.
I would not necessarily recommend it for long hair or for only if you have your hair neatly tied because the design where the cans meet the handband has a button-like clip (gap and all) that easily catch any stray hairs. Small enough it just manage 1-2 strands but once caught it will take some careful prying to get it loose. Which either damage or lose the hair. That said if you are able to adjust to this small design flaw it's a good value headphones.

Sound, comfort and build quality are all at least 8 out of 10.
The price-quality ratio is excellent, most likely some of the best out there.

Very good, but not enough for studio
The headphones are perfect crafted, very comfortable and strong. The only problem for me was the sound which is not flat enough for mixing and mastering. Anyway it’s a very good product!

It's a gem
In search for a nice headphone I found these in a sound demo on you tube.
After listening to the HD560S, HD600, HD490, Hifiman Arya stealth, for the price the DT 900 pro X suprised me big time. At least over the headphone socket of my REGA Aethos they sound impactful, the bass realy can rumble. Yesterday I put on a track of Geoff Castellucci and I felt the rumble in my head en chest, for this money realy incredible. The mids are slightly vailed and the highs are probably not the most accurate.
But they bring the music on in a very engaging way.

Clear, punchy, balanced
I have always mixed with several monitoring options before. However, whenever I want to master and mix with more clarity and really want a balanced perception of the mix I choose these headphones.
Personally, they can be a bit uncomfortable for the top of my head if I am mixing for more than 3 hours. But that's part of the point. I can really focus on the small details and space thanks to the open back design and the lower impedance requirement. It's great to notice nuances in reference tracks and just listen without ear fatigue. I would listen for hours if it wasn't for the little uncomfortable pain after longer times of listening. But it's minor. Totally recommend.

Great sound, but durability is slightly disappointing
I bought the beyerdynamic DT 900 PRO X in 2022 and have been very happy with the sound from the beginning. The sound and comfort are excellent, and even after several years of daily usage I still enjoy using them (after replacing the ear cushion once).
Unfortunately, I have had some issues with the build quality. The headband felt cheaply made at first; it seems beyerdynamic has improved that part since then, but I still had to buy several replacements and even use superglue on all of them. After around four years, a piece on the right side of the size adjustment mechanism broke off. The headphones still work, but I now have to be more careful when adjusting them, and the broken plastic makes an audible cracking sound when I stretch them to put them on.
For around €250, I had hoped they would last longer without these kinds of problems. Maybe four years is acceptable, but for studio headphones in this price range I expected a bit more durability. But then again, almost daily use. That said, I would buy them again because the sound and comfort are very good, and the next clearly better options seem to cost around €500.

Amazing & balanced sound, comfort is not perfect.
I needed a new headset to replace/complete my DT-770 Pro which could support swappable cables.
It not only has amazing sound quality and balance on its high/low-ends (compared to the DT-770 Pro with its mid range that outshined everything) but the build quality was outstanding.
The only problem was the comfort compared to my old headset. The strength which presses onto my head is a little bit too strong at times, and I wish it would be a bit larger for my big ears.

Looks cozier than it feels
From the looks of it, you might think this is the most comfortable pair of headphones ever. They are not, although they provide decent comfort and premium sound quality. I get mild discomfort after wearing them for over an hour, especially where the arch touches the top of my head, which is a bit disappointing. Sound-wise, they are the best pair of monitor headphones I’ve ever owned.
