WES Audio Mimas

Ich hab den Mimas nun seit zwei Monaten und ich bin sehr glücklich damit. Hinsichtlich dieser Bewertung, muss ich leider sagen dass es mein Einstieg in die analoge Recording Welt ist und daher nicht super aussagekräftig. Aber die Überlegungen die mich dazu brachten mir den Kompressor zuzulegen, haben sich bestätigt.

Meine Erwartungen und was der Mimas mir bringt:
Die leichten Sättigungseffekte beim komprimieren und die durch den Transformator entstehen, sorgen für ein runderes Klangbild – und löst für mich das Problem von sterilen Höhen und dass es eben nicht ganz professionell klingt, egal wie sehr ich in der DAW mit EQ, Saturation und Compression Plugins dran rumschraubte.

Zudem kommt eine größere Lautheit – da die Amplituden-Peak abgefangen werden in angereicherte Obertöne umschlagen (habe ich gehört, macht aber sinn soweit wie ich es verstehe).

Zudem kommt es zu einer angenehmen Färbung von Transienten. Klingt alles einfach ein bisschen angereicherter.

Allgemeines:
Im groben würde ich den Kompressor als angenehm färbend beschreiben, der super auf Vocals, Drums und clean Gitarren passt.

Es ist ja übrigens ein FET 1176 Nachbau, da kann man sich dann weiter zu belesen was es damit auf sich hat.

Die Attack Zeiten gehen nicht niedriger als ca. 20ms und das merkt man auch, aber es ist eben kein VCA digital Gedöns und dafür kann man dann auch ein plugin nehmen wenn man es ganz einstampfen will. Und der Release geht maximal bis 50ms runter.

Was mir auffiel ist, dass man viel deutlich hört wie man den Kompressor einstellt, als bei den digitalen Varianten, womöglich weil man nicht durch ein visuell informatives GUI ablenkt wird.

Ansonsten noch zum Abschluss: Die USB Verbindung ist ein Traum. Und es gibt einen zusätzlichen Saturation Modus, der ok ist. Der "all Buttons in" Modus bläst einem jetzt nicht um, aber geht schon in eine schöne dreckige Richtung. Und die Knöpfe des Mimas leuchten nett wenn man sie berührt. Toll.

Ich benutzte den Kompressor momentan auf allem was es verträgt - da es eben mein einziger Kompressor ist :)

In short:

I open the session and the Mimas are set and ready to go - even in stereo! It’s ridiculous! The additional options on this piece of equipment are amazing:

· low cut filter with 3 options
· 3 instantly recallable settings (abc)
· fully DAW-automated if you’re into that type of thing
· plug-in usability is simple and reliable
· all button mode and also various button mode
· durable knobs made of metal
· pretty lights

In depth:
I’m amazed at what plug-ins can do nowadays, yet they still can’t match the same edge, punch, tangibility and density that analog equipment has. With the Mimas I can simply switch through 3 presets instantaneously(!) and decide which one fits better into the mix. I can compress vocals or voice-overs with pretty extreme settings and it still sounds natural.
I can lower the volume of the voice to make it sit back in the mix with clarity and without the signal being harsh.
Compared to a plug-in there is no muddiness. It’s just a lot more precise. When I bounce files in place through the Mimas, the waveform just shows a different story. Incredibly compact, yet no pumping, no harsh frequencies.

I purchased two units for stereo applications, which is a bit more unusual in the FET world due to the sensitivity of calibrating the units. These came perfectly calibrated and should you be in need of fine tuning,
there are slightly more complex but well detailed instructions on the Wes-Audio homepage.

To be fair, it’s worth mentioning that this compressor doesn’t sound exactly like the original. I think the NG 1176 from West Audio is probably a closer match if you’re looking for total recall. I personally don’t mind at all. I like the compactness of the 500 series.

Also, some have mentioned that it’s not easy to precisely set your settings on the hardware, due to the “light-metering”. Visually I would agree. However, I don’t use the hardware to switch the settings.
The plug-in is nice and precise, plus your ears should be doing the work. ;)
In general, the knobs are sturdy and have an overall quality feel to them and I do quite like the lights.

So far it’s been great on drums/drum bus, parallel compression, guitars and keys and especially on vocals and voice overs. I feel it’s not quite as versatile as a VCA so it’s good to think about which applications you need it for beforehand.

All in all, I think it’s easy to tell, that I simply love these units! Highly recommended and great for a modern, precise and fast workflow.

Je suis encore en train de m’habituer au Mimas mais dès mes premiers tests j’ai été enchanté par le compresseur. Il fait exactement ce qu’on attends d’un 1176. On peut lui rentrer et le résultat reste très musical et ouvert. Je le trouve moins coloré qu’un UA 1176 Rev B que j’ai pu utiliser mais ça ne me dérange pas, au contraire cela rend le Mimas plus versatile.

J’adore la flexibilité avec les filtre de sidechain, la possibilité de comparer instantanément deux réglages, le mode saturation (sans compression) et SURTOUT le recall grâce aux Plugins Wes Audio.

Il s’agit de mon quatrième appareil Wes Audio et je suis toujours enchanté du son, de leur software et de le support client !

C'est un compresseur FET avec la possibilité de shunter la compression pour avoir une saturation fort prononcée. Il a du caractère et sait être discret si on ne lui rentre pas trop dedans.
La possibilité de SC à 3 fréquences (60, 90 et 150Hz) permet de sortir beaucoup de basses du signal.
Mon module Wes Audio préféré (je possède Hypérion, Rhea et Titan également).
Par contre après quelques heures d'utilisation j'ai déjà 1 led de la façade qui a cessé de fonctionné. Mauvais signe ? J'ai déjà contacté le constructeur pour un autre sujet je vais voir ce qu'il en pense. Leur réponse a été très rapide la première fois.
