Toca SFDJ-10RP Freestyle Djembe RP, Diametre 10", height: ca: 51cm, colour: Bali Red, lightweight and durable seamless synthetic shell, ideal for drum circles, teachers and all level of players, hand selected goatskin head for authentic look and sound
As a djembe group facilitator I wanted to get a drum that was cheap, easy to transport and sounded good.
Pros: The sound quality is very good for a synthetic drum, especially around the edges. It may not have the depth of a wood drum but it can certainly produce good tone. It is very lightweight and easy for children to and play (Toca have different sizes of this same drum sold by Thomann) Carry bag and harness provided gives great value for money.
Cons: The lip around the edge of the striking surface has separated from the drum slightly which may happen if the drum is dropped occasionally (obviously) I have 3 of these drums and it has happened on 2 of them. A slightly more bizarre con is that the whole surface of the drum is very smooth which makes holding it to play a little more difficult and transporting that little bit more cautious as it can slide around.
Conclusion: I do recommend this drum for beginners and those who want to learn the djembe but don't want to pay a fortune. For drumming group facilitators or those who would like to take it a little more seriously I would advise you look at a rope tuned Toca djembe - these are available at a similar price.
As a Drumming facilitator with mostly youth groups I wanted something that was cheap, was durable, sounded great, was easy to transport and looked cool. This drum kinda ticks all of those boxes
Pros: It looks really cool and is the first drum that children want to lift and play almost every time. Because it is not a rope tuned drum and is literally a lift it and play it type drum it is mega easy to play. I thought I would have a problem with its size as I thought it was too small but it is surprisingly loud and had hold its own with drums much bigger. Depth of tone is not great but edge tones are very good indeed. Its small size is great for transportation (I have 2 currently among many other drums) the carry bag makes life much easier too and provides a bit of protection too.
Cons: As I mentioned the tone can be a little disappointing but that is what you get from a smaller drum. If you are looking for a deeper tone, get a bigger drum or a wooden one. The ring that you attach the harness to has come undone which I was quite disappointed at but it had no impact on the playing performance of the drum.
Conclusion: Great drum, one of my best purchases for facilitating drumming groups. Perfect for beginners and anyone interested in playing the djembe.
As a drumming group facilitator I want to have drums in my collection that sound great, look great, are durable and don't cost a lot of money. This drum is the perfect drum for anyone who is looking for any or all of these things.
Pros: It looks great for a start, it actually looks even better than in the pictures. Because the drum is rope tuned and has a better head than a lot of the other synthetic drums the tone is much richer and vibrant. For only being 9 inches it has surprising depth and warmth. For anyone who plays the djembe at a high level this drum is a wonderful addition to your sound world and gives a different dynamic that a larger drum would not be able to create.
Cons: The fact that the drum is plastic is the only con I can think of. I want it to be made of wood to have more of an authentic feel, alas! I think this drum is fantastic - very few bad things to say about it.
Conclusion: This drum is brilliant, especially at such a low price. Small? Yes, but it packs a punch. Would love to play the larger model too - worth looking at as well.
