New favourite snare mic

I really like this microphone on snare. The rejection at 180 degrees is the equal of the best cardioid mics I've ever tried so it picks up much less hi hat than most. Which allows your hi hat mic to get a much nicer sound without fighting with bleed from the snare mic. It also means I can position this mic higher under the hi hats and aim it across more of the snare top with little bleed and I really like the tone it gets that way. It's a natural sound and very refreshing after years of miking closer with other types.
Austrian Audio don't publish frequency response but it sounds very neutral to me, which is a relief after so many mics with a large HF boost, I can add my own EQ if I want it. It does not make it sound flat or dull as the detail is excellent for a dynamic, and suits any EQ you wish.
I've tried it on guitar amp and had no problem, being un-hyped it needs a small boost in high mid EQ but I prefer that to a fixed built-in peak. Also works very well on toms but relatively expensive for that role.
The swiveling head is actually quite bulky, even slightly bigger than an ND46, fortunately the design allows flexible positioning. But I keep wishing it could angle just slightly more. It is active dynamic requiring phantom power. This seems to enhance the response, it is almost like a condenser in sound but with a smooth top end, like a 441. The switches are recessed too deep for my taste and the case needn't be that bulky, but everything is high quality.
After using this for a while I'm convinced this is my new number one mic for snare

Erste Eindrücke / Vergleich mit Shure BETA 57A und ElectroVoice RE20

Ich verwende das OD5 zur Abnahme von Holzblasinstrumenten (Saxophon, Klarinette und Flöte) auf der Bühne.

Der Klang des OD5 wirkt offen und natürlich, ohne überbetonte Frequenzbereiche, was nicht heißen soll, dass ich es als komplett neutral einschätzen würde.
Das BETA 57A klingt enger und weniger rund.
Das RE20 überträgt die Obertöne und die Nebengeräusche bei enger Mikrofonierung weniger detailliert bzw. präsent. Es klingt im Vergleich etwas matter und weniger offen. Im Ergebnis hat man damit aber evtl. direkt einen angenehm warmen Klang.

Der Output des OD5 liegt um ungefähr 6db über dem BETA 57A und um 12db über dem RE20, was sehr komfortabel ist.

Das Pad und die Filter, die sicherlich sehr nützlich sein können, habe ich bisher noch nicht getestet, aber auch nicht benötigt.

Der drehbare Mikrofonkorb ist wirklich ein tolles Feature, um das OD5 gut und einfach zu positionieren.

Das Mikrofon kommt in einer schönen Verpackung und in einem Case, in dem es gut geschützt ist. Das OD5 ist größer, als ich von den Produktfotos her erwartet hätte.

Einziger Kritikpunkt ist die Halterung. Sie wirkt, als ob sie nicht speziell für dieses Mikrofon konstruiert wurde. Sie hält bisher, aber ich habe noch kein volles Vertrauen in die Zuverlässigkeit. Ansonsten macht alles einen sehr wertigen Eindruck.

Für den Preis bekommt man ein wirklich gutes Mikrofon, das sich sicherlich etablieren wird.

Mikrofon ist solide gebaut, Schwenkmechanismus ist top

Solide Bass, nicht sehr detaillierte Höhen.

Mikro ist seeehr sensitiv und nimmt alle Handhabungsgeräusche sowie fast alle Vibrationen der Oberflächen, mit denen es in Kontakt durch Stativ kommt, gerne auf. Sie werden den Lüfter der Mac Mini-Lüftung über dieses Mikrofon nicht hören, aber sie werden sicher hören, wie der Tisch von diesem Lüfter vibriert. Der Stoßdämpfer ist ein absolutes Muss

Leider, es funktioniert nicht mit allen Vorverstärkern gut. Während es bei RME totenstill war, gab es bei Verwendung anderer Vorverstärker (Evo16, FetAmp Phantom) deutliche Oszillationsgeräusche (ca. 4 Hz). Muss der aktive elektronische Schaltkreis im Mikrofon schuld sein.

Ich denke, es wäre eine echte Bombe, ohne eigene aktive Vorverstärkerstufe.

Bei diesem Preis habe ich gemischte Gefühle. Einerseits ist der Aufbau großartig und er klingt fantastisch, wenn er mit RME betrieben wird (nicht mit anderen meine Vorverstärkern), andererseits ist die aktive Dynamik, die die Quelle der Oszillations darstellt, eine umstrittene Wahl. Es wäre echt besser Mikro, wenn es einfach passiv dynamisch war ohne selben aktiven Gain-Stage
