Speaking with a modern vintage voice

Yamaha Revstar RSS02T Swift Blue

The Revstar RSS02T Swift Blue from Yamaha brings together modern specifications with a distinctive vintage charm. At its core are two powerful AlNiCo 5 P90 single coils, covering a wide musical spectrum from clear cleans through to cutting riffs. The five-way pickup switch also offers out-of-phase sounds alongside the usual range of configurations, and hidden beneath the tone control pot is a passive mid and bass boost. The defining idea here is flexibility – and in practice, the Revstar proves exceptionally adaptable, a true everyday workhorse for musicians. The build is equally noteworthy: The mahogany body features moderate chambering in the sides, making the guitar lighter while also giving it an extremely resonant and lively tonal response. The Revstar delivers a very boutique vibe at an appealing price point.

A classic reimagined

The look of the Yamaha Revstar is unmistakable. It feels like a timeless classic from guitar history – just seen through a 21st-century lens. The choice of woods follows a tried-and-tested formula: The mahogany body and neck provide a mid-focused sound profile, while the maple top adds a pleasing high-end presence. The rosewood fingerboard, featuring white-line inlays and 22 jumbo stainless steel frets, combines with the 12" radius and C-shaped neck profile to deliver a very comfortable playing experience. The neck is reinforced with carbon strips, enhancing stability and making the Revstar less susceptible to changing conditions. This construction not only improves durability, but also benefits the guitar's resonance and sustain. In that sense, Yamaha has taken classic guitar specifications and carried them confidently into a new era.

Powerful P90 pickups

The tone of P90 pickups can be described as bright and articulate, with strong midrange presence and a pleasing high-end structure. The AlNiCo 5 P90s fitted to the Revstar have a moderate output, allowing for dynamic playing from clean tones through to mid-gain sounds – ideal for vintage enthusiasts. At higher gain settings, P90s are prone to some noise; however, many players gladly accept this trade-off for their legendary timbre. Even with fuzz tones, the pickups stand out for their clarity and dynamic response, making solos and riffs shine. All in all, the Yamaha Revstar RSS02T is a modern instrument capable of covering a broad musical range, from Rock and Blues to Funk. For guitarists focused on modern high-gain sounds, the humbucker-fitted RSS20 is an alternative well worth considering.

About Yamaha

For decades, Yamaha has been one of the world's best-known manufacturers of musical instruments and audio technology. The Japanese company's long history began at the end of the 19th century with the harmonium. The product range has constantly expanded since then, which has made Yamaha one of the few manufacturers today to offer almost the entire range of existing musical instruments: From upright and grand pianos to guitars, wind instruments, and bowed string instruments and from drums and percussion to electronic keyboards and synthesizers. Yamaha is also a major force in the field of audio engineering as a manufacturer of mixing consoles, amplifiers, PA systems, and more. Yamaha's guiding principle is to combine traditional craftsmanship with state-of-the-art technology.

A very flexible sound

The Yamaha Revstar RSS02T features a range of modern specifications that make it highly versatile in practice. In particular, the cleverly designed circuitry around the P90 pickups makes this guitar into a powerful all-rounder across a wide variety of settings. Thanks to the dynamic response of the pickups, the volume and tone controls allow for excellent clean-up, enabling a wide palette of sounds even with an overdriven amplifier. In combination with the integrated focus boost and the out-of-phase configurations, it's entirely possible to play an entire show with just the Revstar, a good amplifier – and perhaps a tuner! Of course, it also performs convincingly in more complex setups. The Yamaha Revstar RSS02T will appeal equally to ambitious players and professional guitarists, who will know to value its chambered build especially. For safe transport, a high-quality gig bag is included as standard.

I Love it.
Dan tristan 19.05.2023
First, I like the design of this guitar, its unique.

Second, I trust YAMAHA quality. The finish is good overall. Frets are okay, its smooth and comfortable to play on.

Last but not the least, The Sound. I love the sound of the pick ups. I have many options and its usable for many genres.

My wife bought this guitar for me for our wedding anniversary and my birthday. I'm really happy of my new guitar.

Thanks thomann for the good service.

Beautiful, but too heavy
Gandorf 18.06.2024
Top quality workmanship, lovely fretwork, P90s sound great (not a huge fan of the focus switch), smooth neck, looks great.

So why did I return it? Simply too heavy for me: My one was 4kg, which felt like an anchor on the shoulder after standing for 30 mins. These are advertised as chambered, but I think they filled the chambers with concrete in my case! I'm aware the weight can vary, so you might be luckier than I was.

It's a pity that Thomann don't publish the weights for individual guitars like Sweetwater, then you could pick the one you get. Ah well maybe someday....

It's a shame, Yamaha need to look at making this lighter and it would be amazing. In the meantime I'm going to try an SG special p90 at 3kg...

Outstanding
Georgiparmakov 31.12.2024
Truly phenomenal. It took some time to get the right one but it was spot on. Had major problems with UPS. Thomann support is 10/10 as always.

The guitar has top notch fretwork and sustain for days. All the sounds are usable. Sits incredibly well in a mix. The clean boost is a lot of fun. Incredible craftsmanship.

You can't go wrong with this one. I haven't played my other guitars which cost so much more in two months now.
