A professional bargain
The Varytec Hero Spot 230 stands out with an LED whose performance significantly surpasses the many alternative fixtures in this price range. Delivering impressive output and reliability in demanding environments, it also offers a well-rounded feature set that feels like it's been designed with real thought. This professional moving head includes a variable dispersion angle, PWM control that makes it well suited for film and video work, and an efficient fan management system that keeps operation quiet enough for theatre settings. It also integrates zoom functionality, two gobo wheels, and both linear and circular prisms, with a streamlined colour wheel that prioritises performance by omitting one colour compared to similar models. In terms of connectivity and control, it provides both three-pin and five-pin DMX sockets and offers flexible operation modes, including an economical DMX option that uses very few channels, making it adaptable to a wide range of setups.
A wide range of features
At the heart of the Hero Spot 230 is an LED that delivers 230 watts with a dispersion angle of 11º to 25°, combining precision with flexibility. There's wide range of effects, made possible by the two gobo wheels with seven gobos each (one of which is rotatable), along with two prisms that rotate in both directions for added movement. The colour wheel includes an open position plus warm white, red, green, dark and light blue, yellow, and magenta, with split colours for smoother transitions. The five-step PWM range from 650 to 25,000Hz makes it well suited for film applications. Setup is simple, whether used on the floor or mounted with the included Omega brackets, while control is handled via automatic programmes, master-slave mode, sound-to-light through DMX, or directly from the base menu, keeping operation straightforward yet versatile.
For large-scale shows
Designed for professional use in larger venues, the Hero Spot 230 delivers strong beam intensity alongside a wide range of effects, making it a flexible choice across different applications. Party organisers without a lighting console can access eight automatic shows directly from the menu, while nightclub owners can run the strobe and pan-tilt auto programmes using just six DMX channels. In live club environments, 18 DMX channels unlock greater creative control and allow for more detailed programming. For film and video work, the adjustable pulse width modulation ensures reliable on-camera performance, while the fan can be switched to silent mode, a feature that's also valuable in theatre settings.
About Varytec
Over the years, Thomann has greatly enriched its already extensive range of lighting products with its in-house brand Varytec. In addition to LED spotlights, theatre lighting, and moving lights, Varytec offers an arsenal of matching accessories. Tripods, cables, power distributors, and all kinds of other components are, like the lighting solutions themselves, manufactured by well-known names in the field. The firm's direct sales approach, which eliminates intermediate retailers, ensures that all of these products are nevertheless attractively priced. Varytec's range comprises well over 200 items, which will illuminate everything from home-streamer setups to photo studios, theatres, and concert halls.
The Hero Spot 230 in action
For large shows, Hero Spots can be grouped in 18-channel mode to create coordinated colour schemes through individual colour control and split options, while gobos with shake effects and prism rotations with motorised focus help get the evening to an eyecatching start. Of particular interest are the Fan Mode and the head's dimming function, which add flexibility and fine-tuning to professional performances. To keep operation as quiet as possible, Silent Mode can be selected as the quietest of the three fan modes, though this may come with reduced light output. For precise static lighting setups, one of the three dimming modes can be chosen, which then activate when pan/tilt, the colour wheel, or a gobo wheel is in motion.
