Easy handling

The budget-friendly CD 55 from the t.bone is a dynamic instrument microphone with a cardioid pickup pattern, tailored primarily for toms and snares but also suitable for percussion. It comes equipped with a versatile rim clamp that allows for direct attachment to drum hoops, and thanks to its screw-clamp design, it can also be fixed to other surfaces like the sound hole of a cajón – opening up a wide range of uses, especially for beginners. For those who prefer a more traditional setup, the microphone also features an integrated stand mount.

Lightweight durability

The CD 55 features a durable yet lightweight plastic housing that effectively shields its internal components from accidental stick hits. With a high maximum sound pressure level of 140dB SPL, it handles loud signals with ease, making it well-suited for percussion miking. Its cardioid polar pattern captures sound clearly from the front while reducing unwanted noise from the rear. The CD 55 delivers clear, reliable sound quality that's well-suited for beginners getting started with recording.

Budget solution for live applications

Rugged and budget-friendly, the t.bone CD 55 is an ideal entry-level microphone for anyone starting out with tom and snare miking. It's well-suited for demo recordings in rehearsal spaces or home studios, but truly shines in live settings. The rim clamp included here makes mounting and positioning effortless, allowing for quick setup and minimal downtime between sets. In short: a smart and practical choice for newcomers looking to streamline their live drum setup.

About the t.bone

Since 1994, the t.bone has been one of Thomann's in-house brands, and its name can be found on devices such as headphones, wireless systems, in-ear equipment, and various microphones and matching accessories. "the t.bone" products are made exclusively by renowned companies who also manufacture products for other well-known brands. This provides a clear advantage: Brand-quality products at very reasonable prices. And word gets around: One in seven Thomann customers has already bought at least one product from the t.bone.

Not just for the rim

The easiest and most efficient way to mount a the t.bone CD 55 is with the rim clamp supplied for this very purpose, which allows for direct, space-saving attachment to a drum rim or any similarly sturdy mounting point. To support a wider range of uses beyond drums and percussion, the microphone also includes a built-in stand mount, allowing it to be easily used with standard mic stands. This expands the creative possibilities for recording a variety of other instruments, making it well worth trying out.

Bargain

I don't know why I spent years buying industry standard mics. This little mic, for the price, simply cannot go wrong. It's plastic, so I'm not sure it'd withstand too many errand hits, but really, it's quite fine for the purpose of mic'ing toms and snares. I have two toms I'm using these for, and seriously, a little corrective EQ, and it's absolutely fine for the vast majority of us home studio guys. You'd have to be pretty picky to want to spend 4 times the price on a mic that will maybe sound 10% better. What is the point... Cheap doesn't mean bad, not in this day and age!

Useful!
Edgar Blackdagger 06.01.2021
Okay, they do have a very narrow frequency response, they sound thin and dull at the same time, BUT:
this makes them very useful for sounds that need to take less space in the mix, I wouldn't use them for toms, but they make snare tops sound quite puffy (which is great for some styles), they are great as snare bottoms, they can be useful for electric guitar accents and take saturation well, so they can be used for effect vocals or drum room crush mics.
They actually feel great and they come with quite decent tom mounts that I now use for my Oktava MK-012 mics.

Also, because of their lack of bottom end, they don't have a strong proximity effect, so you can place them QUITE close to the sound source without having to EQ out several db of 150-300Hz.

After hearing them on toms I was going to sell them off, but after experimenting with them I think they are indeed useful for certain tasks and they are definitely worth the money. I'm keeping them!

Can't go cheaper, so what can we really expect...
Dirty Five Given 22.10.2020
This is the lowest you can go when buying a mic, so having any expectations of it other than it would generally pick up the frequencies in roughly the range it was advertised as, is too much.
It works. It's built cheaply. It can record your drums, but you're definitely gonna have a harder time mixing them, than if you used something more classy than this.
I still recommend it, because there's a lot of possible uses for very cheap microphones - eg. I use this one to record band practice.
