Really well designed for live use
Nicholas3612, 03.10.2015
We're using this to trigger samples and vocal loops in a band playing dub style rock. I think the thing to appreciate here is just how well it's designed for live work. I'm referring to stuff like the 'all sounds off' button and the ability to audition sounds without feeding them out to the audience. It's also easy to program, so in rehearsals it's proving very quick to tweak everything as we build up tracks. I should say that the sample management software is really easy to use (this enables you to collect sounds and kits on the computer and transfer them across). It may not be the most sophisticated sampler in terms of deep editing functions, but as I say, for the situation it's aimed at - which is live triggering along with a conventional drum set up, I think it's really well thought out.

The presets that it comes loaded with are pretty naff, - they don't really do it justice - but they give you the idea. And after all, the whole point is to load it with your own stuff.

Just to answer a few criticisms and queries i've seen.
1. It feels pretty robust... I also recommend buying Thomann's case in the bundle along with the mounting bracket
2. The pads are generally fine for one off triggering - the thing that's probably really lacking is the ability to layer samples in a sophisticated way so they change in timbre as you hit them harder. So i generally use the pads on non-dynamic settings.
3. At first it does seem that the system volume is set too low - but there's an overall setting to boost this by up to 12db so you can deal with it that way. And in practice, when going through a PA then you just turn that up to suit.
4. If you're going to position it by your hi-hat as most drummers do, be prepared for it to get covered in wood chips from your sticks!
5. Yes, it's expensive... But there's nothing else out there like this so you just have to bite the bullet on that.

And it's proved a generally useful bit of kit to have around at rehearsal and in the studio - like storing tracks you might want to practice with, cutting up songs into loops and seeing what alternative arrangements sound like, recording rehearsals (plug in a mic), playing rough mixes at rehearsals for people to listen to, as a metronome...

All in all, very pleased with it and it's functionality beyond what I originally bought it for.

Roland make the best drum samplers
Anthony549, 11.04.2016
Previously bought the Roland SPD-S. Upgraded to the SPD-SX. So much more functionality than the previous version. Little things like the USB connectivity. SD ram and larger external supported memory.

Pros
USB interface
SD memory
Loading and setting samples to pads via PC
Live effects on active samples, really easy and good.
Sturdy product.
4 external triggers - I use the DDrum triggers with the kit.

Cons
Setting up the Sample pad as midi controller with Reaper and Abelton Live DAWs can't be done via USB, need a Midi to USB cable.

Conclusion
If you are building a hybrid kit or expanding an electronic kit this is a very powerful tool and worth the money.

Awesome piece of kit
06.01.2015
I use this mainly for triggering midi (through Ableton and Battery). It works great, reliable, solid build. Some people find the top pads unresponsive but they are designed to be hit from the top as opposed to from the front.

Great built in effects, looping facilities, software is really simple too (once you have the correct sample rate for your samples). Presets for external acoustic triggering are great, pretty much plug and play and then adjust sensitivity or whatever according to your playing style.

Great as a stand alone unit or as a midi trigger. Really adds to the scope of what you can do live (especially with Ableton)

Perfect for modernising live perfomance
AdamIrl, 03.07.2018
When my band decided to move away from traditional acoustic drums & fully live performances, the SPD-SX was the best asset in bringing the new setup to life. It's incredibly easy to drop your samples in with the software unit and it ran full backing tracks with no issues.
It wasn't used in a studio setting but I believe it can be quite difficult to map to a drum rack in Ableton, so that's something to be aware of and brush up on if that's what you plan on buying it for.
All-in-all, very sturdy and reliable unit that can take a beating and is easy to assemble and disassemble for live performance, etc. The routing option built in is great as well for allowing you map the click track/backing tracks/etc to wherever they need to go. Fully recommend

very cool device
27.05.2016
I needed spd-sx not just for 9 pads with any sound I want, but for trigger inputs to make a hybrid drumset. It almost ideal for this purpose. almost because of 2 bad things: there is only 2 stereo trigger inputs (4 mono).. I knew it, but I think it's not cool ((. if there was 5 stereo trigger inputs for standard set (kick-snare-3 tom-toms) it would be ideal for me.. just ideal. and there's an issue, everybody knows-the sensivity of 3 higher pads is too low.. you've got to beat it really hard to make a sound. but despite of these issues, SPD-SX is a very cool, functional, and great device. I've got TD-30 Thomann edition drumset and I love Roland stuff a lot. so I bought SPD-SX and it makes me happy like just like TD-30:)

Galwaydrumschool verses the Roland spd-sx!
Barry389, 03.08.2013
Having had about 2 weeks to get to grips with the Roland spd-sx my impression at this stage is that it is a super tool for any drummer interested in working with sampled or electronic sounds.

Not nearly as 'plasticy' or light as some reviews I have read suggested.

Samples destined for the unit must be 44.1 khz/16bit which means a convertion process for those working with higher resolution files..perhaps Roland will update the firmware at some point to allow higher sample/bit rates to be used?

Lots of clever 'drummer friendly' features allow quick sample placement and routing...traditionally a quite tedious task!

You can set the pads to trigger the way you wish very easily i.e loop/re trigger, mono, poly etc..minimal need to refer to the manual!

The 'wave manager' software works well and the unit is instantly recognised by my computers when I plug in the usb cable.
I've also used the unit to 'write' drum parts into my DAW via midi and it works great for that task too..much more fun than tapping on a keyboard!

Having created a 'kit' of orchestral percussion sounds I'm going to use the unit live on a musical next week.

The unit comes 'ready to go' with a great set of 'kits' but for me the real jewel in the crown is the ability to sample 'real' sounds and phrases.

Overall I think it's a great tool and well worth consideration if you are a drummer/musician interested in sampling.

Great all rounder
Myles, 12.08.2015
This is a great all round peice of kit. I play with a gigging covers band that often wants specialised sounds replicating to "make the song". You can sample from almost any source and then edit it to fit. I'm not very technical, so I've avoided this type of technology, thinking it was beyond me - it's NOT. Is so incredibly easy, if I can make and use samples, then anyone can. I use it as a practice pad occasionally, as it's very quiet with the headphones, and more stimulating than a regular pad. I gig with it, and contrary to my initail view - it's a very robust peice of kit.

Ultimate Tool
Matthew Bauer, 06.01.2016
The Roland Sampling Pad is a beast when it comes to getting the job done. With the clean layout, clear features, and built-in effects, it's a powerful tool to add to any musical set up requiring samples, backtracks, or any other sound you can think of.

The perfect drumpad for loading your own samples
Jonesbh, 11.04.2017
It comes loaded with some really cool samples! But the shine of this, is really all the settings and possibility of loading all your own samples. This is the absolute best sampling pad out there!
You can even edit your samples directly on the SPD-SX (start point, end point, gain, trigger mode, etc.). The rubber pads has a great feel and bounciness to them when you play with drumsticks. The build quality is really good, though it's all made in plastic, so you might want a flight case for carrying.
Only minus is that the output is a bit low, but you can fix that by exporting you samples as close to "0"dB and set the output vol. on the sample pad to loudest setting.

AMAZING
14.12.2016
One of my best purchases ever. Feels great, extremely useful for live performance. Also good in the studio for programming drums using MIDI.

Takes time to learn how to use, but well worth reading the manual through.

Only negative I can think of: expensive.

Our fifth member of the band
bozy, 29.05.2015
We bought this unit to provide occasional noises/fills for live use and ended up with almost a 'robot keyboard player'. I would say that this pad is not fully suitable to provide full accompaniment and it cannot replace human keyboard player, but we managed to use it this way for few songs. It sounds so much better now during live gigs. I suggest to buy an FS-2 type pedal for it, our drummer found it more convenient when using pedal.

Very nice device from Roland!!!!
10.07.2015
I am using the Roland SPD - SX for 3 years and I can say that is an amazing device from Roland .
You can do almost everything with this amazing electronic drums .
I tested it playing all kind of music : latino , jazz , rock , heavy metal , etc . . . and I can say that I did not have any problem . All the pads work PERFECTLY , and also all the LEDS ( above every pad ) .
Also the data communication with the external pads works perfectly . . . I use an electronic Drum Bass ( kick ) , an electronic Snare ( with double trigger ) and an electronic cymbal for hi - hat . . . All the products are Roland brand .

I just can say that I had a Small " problem " with this great machine , the OUTPUT volume is NOT so high . . . I wrote an e - mail to Roland and they told me that probably my cables are damaged . . . Anyway , this problem is very easy to fix giving more Gain from the mixer .

You must try it ! 100 % Recomended !

Excellent sampling pad
Greig, 14.03.2015
The Roland SPD SX is an excellent addition to any drum setup.
The pads are very good quality and react well to light and hard strikes.
There aren't many factory pre-sets as this is a sampling pad to be filled with your own sounds.
This really opens up a vast amount of musical possibilities for both beginners and professionals.
I highly recommend the SPD SX.

Roland SPD-SX Sampling Pad
LiamM, 31.03.2015
What the world has been crying out for, for years. use either the internal sounds or load your own samples... once loaded from USB they stay in memory, no faffing about, couldn't live without it now. Had the Yamaha version before this and it doesn't have a hope of matching this for being user friendly or spec.

Great piece of kit
Macbury, 14.05.2017
Seemingly endless possibilities. Easy to figure out how to do anything I want with it. Slightly smaller than I expected but not so small its hard to hit the pads as long as you're looking at it. Pretty solid, taken a few hits to the sides and screen just fine. My only gripe is it needs to be angled towards the player a bit more than I'd like in order to consistently trigger the furthest 3 pads.

Powerful tool
18.01.2015
An extremely versatile tool for any drummer/percussionist. I use it mostly as a percussion/SFX pad for musical theater productions. Saves having to bring along a rack of percussion and timps to have at the side of the kit. Also blends and connects well with other electric kits because of the many inputs/outputs.

A very powerful tool, that I look forward to exploring more of the capabilities.
