Open-backed studio headphones

Following the success of the Neumann NDH 20, which are closed-back over-ear headphones, users who are planning on working more in the sound studio can now opt for the open-back Neumann NDH 30 (shown here in the Black Edition). With a neutral, high-resolution, and strictly analytical sound, these headphones are a studio-grade compact monitoring device, specifically designed for sound engineering work in professional and project studios. These Neumann headphones are based on the sound of the manufacturer's KH series monitor system calibrated with the M1, thus ensuring overall sound compatibility. The focus is on colourless sound reproduction across the entire frequency range, combined with reliable workmanship and luxurious comfort.

Structural elements made of steel and aluminium, as well as foam padding covered with hard-wearing fabric, combine to ensure a long life for the NDH 30s. The earcups can also be folded away to save space. The headphones as sold here include a replaceable, single-sided connection cable with a 6.3mm jack plug, as well as a balanced cable with separate signal routing for the stereo channels to improve channel separation, plus a 3.5 mm adapter and a carrying bag. The high-quality padding, the soft velour, and the adjustable headband all serve to provide high levels of comfort even for longer recording sessions. And the NDH 30s are well-equipped on the inside, too; Neumann has developed proprietary 38mm drivers, installed in pairs and at a slight angle. The open design ensures that the membranes are able to resonate unhindered, while the improved air circulation also makes them more comfortable to wear.

A tool for the control room

With their open design, the Neumann NDH 30 Black Edition headphones are suitable for control rooms, editing suites, and well-appointed project studios. Even more than the closed NDH 20, the focus is on neutrality and analytical sound reproduction. The dynamic drivers cover the entire audio spectrum, from true sub-bass (below 20Hz) up to shimmering treble (as high as 34kHz). Frequency-selective absorbers ensure the further linearisation of the high frequency range. Neumann has designed the sound pattern to be compatible with its own KH monitor series. In addition to sub-bass, the bass range delivers precise definition, while the mid and treble ranges reveal all the strengths and weaknesses of sound sources, with plenty of detail and an absolutely exemplary dynamic range.

About Neumann

Georg Neumann GmbH was founded in Berlin in 1928 - and is certainly one of the most famous brands of microphones in the world. However, this is not the company's only sphere of activity. For many years, the versatile inventor and pioneer Georg Neumann was also involved with vinyl record cutting machines and the development of rechargeable batteries. The technology he developed is still the basis for this now crucial and rapidly expanding market. What is more, for many years the company built highly personalised sound control systems for broadcast studios/theatres and concert halls, and for several years also studio monitors. In 1991, Neumann became part of the Sennheiser group of companies, and in 1999 was the first German company to receive the Technical Grammy for their overall technical achievements.

For editing, mixing, mastering

The NDH 30s have been expressly designed as a high-grade tool for professional use in the recording studio. These open over-ear headphones with their neodymium magnet-driven drivers boast truly outstanding audio resolution, ensuring unerringly analytical and balanced sound reproduction across the full range of frequencies and complex dynamics – despite this, the sound they produce isn't hard on the ears, as is sometimes the case with neutral studio headphones. The headphones are thus ideal for editing, mixing and mastering applications, while at the same time ensuring sound compatibility with Neumann's in-house monitoring solutions. Thanks to their solid workmanship, a weight of less than 400 grams, and comfortable design, the NDH 30s can be heartily recommended for everyday use; they are bound to prove a reliable partner, especially away from the control room in environments which are, acoustically speaking, less than ideal.

For me personally, the Neumann NDH 30 headphones are a game-changer for both production and mixing and mastering. Not only do they look sleek, but they also feel incredibly comfortable during long studio sessions.

The accuracy and clarity they offer make them my go to cans from now on, especially in combination with Sonarworks to flatten out the frequency response for precise audio work.

UM
Woah. Exceeded my expectation.

My background for reference: 25+ years of professional mixing experience.

I've had plenty of headphones and a few sets of monitors over the years, and well, the NDH30's just blew me away. My initial test was with multiple Orchestral instruments across Violin, Viola's, Tuba, Horn section etc. The detail in the sound across dynamic ranges was phenomenal. Very delicate and nuanced aspects were exposed. The depth and width of the sound stage had clarity for making appropriate placement choices. I was most delighted to hear the headphone respond well enough I could easily make the critical choices with confidence.

The next test was with the Moog Mariana plugin. Woah...I had no idea just how fat that plugin actually is until now....but back to headphones. The deep bass was present and not at all diminished like other headphones I've owned. A big plus here for low end response. The details of additional aftertouch material across many presets were crystal clear indeed. Like headphones of this calibre, information always present, but seldom heard were clear and discernible.

I read a lot of reviews on these headphones before purchase, and came across one that compared them to AKG K702, having mixed with those for probably 15 years, I can say this is very very much not the case. The low end response of the NDH30s is significantly better.

I bought these headphones to compliment a purchase of KH120 II / KH750 DSP setup for a new studio, but perhaps the NDH30 are competent enough, I might not rush to buy them just yet.

NDH30 are very much worth the money, I would be very surprised to hear anyone not happy with them for mixing duties.

Kurzum: Klare Empfehlung.
