Amazing unit
Josh Cullen , 26.07.2018
Not just impressive within its price bracket but a generally amazing unit.

I had this unit de-racked on some foam for my intitial testing/ playing around with it as I wasn?t convinced it would be great considering the price, but it was racked up within 5/10 minutes.

Only thing I don?t like about it is that I can only afford one!

I had hoped for much more ...

When Heritage Audio announced that they would be releasing a budget series with the same original components of the Handmade Series, and due to automated processes, keeping the cost of the HA-73EQ below $ 1,000, I knew I needed to get that part.

After numerous reviews, online shootouts and discussions, etc., I first felt encouraged to buy the device, because I'm looking for a Neve 1073-Style PreEQ, Warm Audio is out of the question for me due to various negative experiences and the customer service of the Stam audio products leaves something to be desired respectively here unreliability in the point of delivery time capitalized.
As a rival to my personal shootout, I once used the Golden Age Project Premier 73 PreEQ and my Grace m103.

First of all for processing: Visually in terms of housing, materials and screw connection was done. The Elite Series does not seem like a budget series to me. Although my co-engineer did not think that the feel was as smooth as with his Heritage table-top device, this comparison is a bit lame considering the new price and I could not really agree with that. However, the cheap power supply came to a negative point, for me completely incomprehensible why one does not resort to the internal instead of the external power supply with the wart. This 5¤ more customers would certainly have been willing to pay to go out of the way of this Gameboy counterpart of power supply. Otherwise, as I said, I was satisfied with the workmanship.

The service: At the service I had nothing to complain, everything as usual and had. No unpleasant abnormalities.

Among the features: The features are basically nothing missing, it remains everything as usual from the handmade-in-house competition. What I would have liked, however, would have been a detent at the zero point of the High Frequency.

To the sound: As already mentioned the Elite Series competed against the GAP 73 PreEQ, as well as the Grace m103. The result was disappointing. At exactly the same gain and output settings, the HA-73 EQ was always much quieter than its competitors, so that always a manual volume adjustment had to be made. While the GAP drove a very aggressive, dirty coloration, which allowed a rich low end and deep mid range but fabricated cheap-tinny heights, the Elite Series sounded overall in detail and high quality including at least nice heights, but also very bland in terms of the tonal staining with a blatant deficiency in the same depth and center area (overall hardly pronounced and present according to the analysis tool in comparison to the other two), in which the GAP in turn scored points. Even with more gain and reduced output, you just got into the ugly oversteer without here to achieve the desired, silky-biting Harmonic Distortion. In the mix, the elite unfortunately went under pretty much and could not prevail, as one is used to from many other Neve clones. The Grace was clearly the best choice after all, as he was much better in the mix and much better suited to our 2 test voices, although this preamp is very very clear and non-staining.

Conclusion: Unfortunately, my hope was disappointed, so the HA-73 EQ Elite, as well as the GAP Retour!
