Hard work - but does it pay off?
D.T.F. 17.08.2022
I must admit to be being a bit of sucker for gadgets. I'm open to the principles behind this : 1/ that it encourages full breathing from the depth of the chest 2/ that it strengthens the embouchure muscles. So I'm giving it a try.
It's hard to know if it works because just before I acquired it I had made a huge positive step change in terms of breathing and tone quality (tenor sax). But having said that, it certainly feels like it does some good for both.
The reasons I'm not wholeheartedly endorsing it are that I find it difficult to set up on the mouthpiece (not a huge amount of help from the manufacturers brochure here - you have to look it up on YouTube - and even then it's still tricky) and more importantly I find it very, very uncomfortable to use - for me it's hard on the lips. Both of these - the setting up and the discomfort - improve the more one uses the thing but frankly they are a discouragement when it comes to fitting working with it into a practice routine. It needs to be built up slowly and it eventually gets easier - but it's easy to fall off the horse and difficult to get back on.
Conclusion - it's worth a try.
