As a guitar/ukulele/harp player I have no previous experience on violins, but I think we will get along very well with this one!
The instrument is simply beautiful.
I had the intention to begin violin lessons this year, but in the present situation it is not possible, so I decided to start playing by myself, without a teacher. It is quite a challenge. I had to face and solve all the starting problems alone...! The tuning pegs are quite stiff, and I spent a fair amount of time to get the tuning right. Luckily I have some experience with other string instruments. And I found some helping instructions (with the pegs) in the internet.
The rosin started working better when I made small cuts in it, and I was able to do the basic sounds quite nicely. And then to play the first melody!
For an absolute novice violinist, this has been a great experience.
I agree that learning to play the violin without a teacher is very hard, but I think this is a very good instrument to start with. I got a very good start!
(...) Six months later, I am playing under the supervision of a very competent teacher, and he really likes this violin! It is very suitable for the folk music we play, and it requires surprisingly little tuning, which certainly is a sign of a well-made instrument. I am really happy with my purchase!
(Edit:) Two more teachers have liked this violin's sound and noticed that it needs very little tuning. "This is a nice one", said a folk violinist just some weeks ago!
