Focusrite Clarett+ OctoPre

Pros: All in all the Clarett+ OctoPre is a very nice and well sounding unit. The Air function gives sources a nice shine and the dynamic range is excellent. On drums it's punchy. Vocals are clear and open. Acoustic string instruments and percussion sits well in the mix. The HiZ inputs are fine as well. And the fact the you can use it as a standalone preamp or 8 Chan AD/DA I/O via Adat and WordClock is also a big plus! Sonically a great addition to anyone looking for good quality extension to their studio.
Cons: Small stuff, but I wish that line in, for when inserting external equipment, was fixed at unity gain - straight to AD - and not variable from the gain knobs.
And that the insert points per channel was balanced! But I understand that from a cost perspective and physical space on the back of the unit.
Lastly, it would have been nice when using external sync that the unit would auto detect the samplerate. You have to set that manually.

Den Focusrite Clarett+OctoPre habe ich als ADAT-Erweiterung für Liverecordings erworben. Er integriert sich spielend in meine UAD-Umgebung, zwei gute optische Kabel und schon tauchen die Signale im Mixer auf. Installation und Livebetrieb sind einfach und selbsterklärend.

Ausschlaggebend für den Kauf war neben dem guten Preis-/Leistungsverhältnis die Möglichkeit, über Inserts anderes Outboard einzuschleifen, auch das ist problemlos. Etwas verwirrend finde ich die Umschaltung Air / Insert am Gerät. Mit der Air-Taste kann pro Kanal eine Emulation des Focusrite ISA 110 dazugeschalten werden, laut Bedienungsanleitung und am Gerät scheint es nur ein entweder / oder zu geben, aber auch bei eingeschaltetem "Air" funktioniert das einschleifen über den Insert. Also alles gut, so soll es sein.

Sonst hat das Gerät alles, was heute so gebraucht wird, Samplingraten bis 192kHz, WordClock Synchronisation, alles symmetrisch und im Kanal 1 und 2 ein kombinierter Instrumenten / Mikrofoneingang.

Die XLR-Buchsen 1 + 2 sind etwas schwergängig, das gibt einen Punkt Abzug in der Verarbeitung.

Bei Registrierung Focusrite gibt es jede Menge Software zum Download, als UAD Benutzer benötige ich die allerdings (noch) nicht.

Alles in allem eine gute ADAT-Erweiterung in bestehende Systeme.
