A fretless bass with that Warwick growl

Warwick RockBass Streamer LX 4 SB HP FL, fretless bass guitar

The fretless Warwick RockBass Streamer LX 5 SBHP FL, with its classic curved design and arched top, really is an eyecatching instrument. The two-piece body, finished here in sleek, sharp Solid Black, is made of solid carolina wood, a type of pine that delivers a resonant sound characterized by a very punchy dynamism, while also being very lightweight. Its bolt-on maple neck – reinforced with ekanga veneer stringers – further anchors the sound with assertive midrange frequencies, a crucial part of the typical growling sound associated with Warwick basses. This unique musical character is brought into sharp focus by the reverse-P configuration of the passive P-style split coil, with the passive J-style pickup providing a rich bass foundation.

Adjustable action, plenty of punch

The Warwick RB Streamer LX 4 SBHP FL is a luxury bass (hence the LX) at an affordable price. For starters, its full 34" scale length (864 mm) really packs a punch worth playing with. The high-end hardness of the ebony fingerboard feels great, it looks clean (without any fretlines), and it guarantees that the strings will vibrate exactly as intended. Then, the classic sound of the Streamer's passive pickups can be smoothly blended using the balance control: On top of that, the active 2-band EQ lets bassists not only cut but also actively boost both bass and treble frequencies. And value for money is guaranteed across the board, with chrome hardware that's built to last, providing enduring resistance to wear and corrosion for years of reliable play. The break-proof Just-a-Nut III nut is made from the heavy-duty synthetic material tedur and is fully height-adjustable – just like the two-piece Warwick 3D Bridge. All this means that musicians of all kinds can dial in their string action with pinpoint accuracy.

Adaptability from A to Z

What do experienced bassists looking to upgrade to a fretless and pros who know how flexible such an instrument can be have in common? The Warwick RB Streamer LX 4 SB HP FL has got them covered. Whether they're laying down tracks in the studio or hitting the stage, this bass is ready to go. With its passive P-style and J-style pickups and active EQ, it's a versatile workhorse that'll fit right into a wide range of genres. Sure, the RB stands for RockBass, and it definitely delivers that punchy, powerful Rock tone – but its singing intonation is perhaps best suited to Jazz combos of all kinds, both traditional and modern. That said, its strong midrange presence will help it cut through even the densest Metal mixes, which might also welcome the experimental touch only a fretless bass can deliver. Finally, a heads-up for newcomers: The classic long scale length might feel more comfortable for players with larger hands.

No need for fretlines
SuperJase 04.08.2024
I wanted to dabble in fretless but I was worried that I wouldn't have the ear. I will only play Warwicks so this seemed like a good low cost option to give it a go without too much risk. At this price point I am pretty much blown away by how good this is. I took it on holiday and within a week I can play it in tune just fine, so I was pleased I didn't opt for something with fretlines. Quite happy to record this bass. Plays great, sounds great, looks great. Negatives - It had a hard plastic thing explaining what the controls do that was tricky to cut off without scratching the bass itself, and the gig bag is a Cagoule
