A mighty flexible wireless mic
The Shure PGA98H-TQG is a cardioid electret condenser microphone designed specifically for wind instruments – brass and woodwinds – combining a flexible gooseneck, an integrated horn clamp, and a TA4F (TQG) connector for direct use with compatible Shure wireless bodypack transmitters. The tailored cartridge handles the high sound pressure levels typical of brass instruments, with a maximum SPL of 130dB and a frequency response extending from 60Hz to 20kHz. The cardioid polar pattern focuses pickup on the instrument while rejecting ambient stage noise and bleed from adjacent sources. The black metal finish and low-profile design keep visual presence to a minimum – relevant for broadcast and theatre contexts where microphone visibility matters. A foam windscreen and zipper pouch are included. The PGA98H-XLR version is available separately for wired operation via a standard XLR connection.

A well-constructed condenser
The PGA98H-TQG connects directly to compatible Shure wireless bodypack transmitters via its TA4F (TQG) connector, with operating power supplied by the transmitter itself. Unlike the XLR version, no inline preamplifier or phantom power is required, resulting in a lighter cable arrangement that's particularly well suited to performers who move freely on stage. The cast zinc housing is built to withstand the physical demands of live use; the gooseneck retains its position once adjusted without creeping back, and the integrated horn clamp attaches directly to the bell of a brass or woodwind instrument without tools. Sensitivity is rated at -52dBV/Pa (2.51mV), providing an appropriate output level for wireless bodypack operation, while the 27dB SPL-A self-noise figure remains well suited to the high sound-pressure environments for which the microphone is intended.

About Shure
The American company Shure began developing microphones during the early 1930s and is one of the pioneers of the audio engineering sector. Designed for wireless performance, the Shure PGA98H-TQG handles the typical volume levels of brass and woodwind instruments without distortion – with ample headroom even for a trumpet bell at close range – while the cardioid pattern provides useful rejection of drums, amplifiers, and any other stage sources that might be positioned off-axis. The flexible gooseneck allows the capsule to be positioned precisely to suit both the instrument and the desired tonal character: Positioning the capsule closer to the bell emphasises projection and brightness, while moving it slightly further back produces a more balanced, open character that retains subtle articulations. The microphone can be repositioned quickly without unclipping the mount from the instrument. The foam windscreen the PGA98H comes with reduces breath noise and outdoor wind interference while preserving the high-frequency response. A zipper pouch is also included to protect the assembly during transport between gigs.
