The AE-10's little brother

The Aerophone GO AE-05 is a compact take on Roland's first wind controller with built-in sound generation, the AE-10, which combines a portable design with a range of practical features for players. It includes 11 built-in sounds, while the free companion app provides access to up to 50 additional sounds and allows the instrument to be customised to suit different playing styles. Sounds can be played through the two integrated speakers or a pair of headphones, giving players a choice of how they want to listen while playing. Powered by four rechargeable AA Ni-MH batteries, the Aerophone GO AE-05 is well suited to playing on the move, while a separately available USB power supply provides an alternative power option.

A wide range of functions

The Aerophone GO AE-05 follows the same key and button layout as a saxophone, which allows experienced saxophonists to use their familiar fingering technique without having to adapt to a new playing system. Its wind sensor responds to the force of the player's breath, while the mouthpiece combines air-pressure and bite-sensitive sensors to provide control over vibrato and pitch. The instrument's 11 built-in sounds can be adjusted using the rotary controls on the rear, which also include a control for tuning the instrument to different keys and a dedicated volume control. The USB port can be used to transfer MIDI data to a computer for recording, while the sounds themselves are generated by a PCM synthesizer.

For beginners and advanced players

The Roland Aerophone GO AE-05 gives saxophonists a digital instrument that can be played silently through headphones, making it well suited to practice without disturbing others, while its broad selection of sounds provides plenty of room for expressive playing. Weighing just 0.695kg, it is considerably lighter than a conventional saxophone, which can make it particularly comfortable for beginners to handle, and its built-in reverb effect adds a little extra depth to the sound and can be used to give performances a more well-rounded character. The instrument is supplied with a carrying case, making it easy to transport along with its accessories wherever it is needed.

About Roland

Roland was founded in 1972 in Osaka, Japan, and has been designing and building electronic musical instruments ever since. During its successful history, Roland has launched many ground-breaking instruments, from legendary drum machines such as the TR-808 and the TR-909 to synthesizer classics like Jupiter-8, SH-101 and the iconic TB-303. Besides synthesizers, Roland's workstations and electric pianos are also very popular. Equally well-known is Roland’s subsidiary Boss, under whose brand name it designs and sells principally guitar pedals and effects units. Under the Roland Professional A/V label, the company additionally develops and distributes professional equipment for virtually every branch of audio and video production – from home studios through to commercial applications.

Personalisation with the Aerophone GO Plus app

The free Aerophone GO Plus app for iOS and Android provides a range of options for adapting the digital instrument to individual preferences, including adjustments to sounds and playing parameters. Breath, lip pressure, and octave key controls can also be configured, allowing the GO AE-05 to respond more closely to each player's technique and playing style. The app can additionally stream tracks from a personal music library, with the option to slow down playback or repeat selected passages in a loop for focused practice. Music is transmitted to the Aerophone GO AE-05 via Bluetooth and can be heard through headphones or the instrument's built-in speakers, while the Aerophone GO Ensemble app allows up to seven Aerophone GO players to perform together wirelessly, with the individual parts mixed within the app and played back through an external monitor speaker.

Excellent practise tool & travel companion
Sax Panther 01.03.2022
Ended up choosing this model after weighing in the price, size, features and compatibility with 3rd party software vendors. Have not had to regret the decision!

The physical layout enables practising sax fingerings and test out tunes easily, quietly and fast. Since the Aerophone is a MIDI device, you can use it with various music production software and thus tweak the sounds to your liking. The included soundbank is suitable mostly for practise sessions, but it fits the bill for quick tryout sessions on the spot. I haven't used the internal speaker much, since the output is really flat and narrow, but it's a nice addition to have as well if you need to quickly demo a tune for someone else and don't have an external speaker to connect to.

Pro's:
- small and lightweight
- follows standard sax keying
- breath control pretty linear
- enables long practise sessions anytime, anywhere
- USB MIDI output

Con's:
- breath and bite control not exactly analogous to a real sax
- some key presses not always registered
- a bit plasticky

Overall extremely happy going for this model!

EB
A pretty average instrument, but a great Midi-controller
Electric Blush 06.01.2023
If you want to use this as a stand alone electric wind instrument; look at the more expensive models.

The sounds are "ok" for practice and play, but don't hold up in any professional capacity.

If, however you use it as a breath controller for a DAW with good breath controllable instruments / VSTi... then suddenly you have something that sounds great, and is a lot more expressive than just a normal keyboard.

I played saxophone when i was younger, and i wanted something to bring back the experience of a wind instrument in my music production. The Aerophone Go works great as something to just play with when I'm traveling and just want to practice or just jam. But when i hook it up to my DAW and match it with something like the SWAM instruments or other great plugins, then suddenly i can get really good sounding woodwind or brass in my tracks, with more natural breath feel. I LOVE IT!

Best electronic saxophone I ever bought
Saxmaster 01.02.2022
The quality of the instrument is very good, it plays wonderful. I plug it into my MacBook Pro and I record songs on Logic Pro X with ease. It is a wonderful instrument and I recommend it to anyone who wants to write and record songs on a computer (because it is also a MIDI) or just simply play and have fun.

Does a good job at teaching saxophone
Kanna Jam 14.01.2025
It's a very good product to have to train your skills on the sax. Kinda complicated to tweak settings but there is an app that can help you with that. The sound it makes is pretty bad tho, but i guess that's not a problem since you'll mostly use this to train and never record anyway.
