Radial J33 record deck DI box

Richard81, 22.09.2015
I have not had the Radial j33 DI box for very long to be able to give it a long term review, what I liked first of all out of the box was it's ruged construction and the feel of quality with the weight of a good DI box.
I have already given it a fair bit of use connecting it up to the desk on a PA system to enable me to play some records.
The deck is a vintage Technics SL-150 with an SME tone arm that I know gives a superb sound and connecting it through the Radial J33 did not disappoint in any way.
The music was blues/rock with the cymbals sounding clear along with the guitar and the bass and drums sounding solid and punchy as they also should.
All in all I am very pleased with the DI box and would highly recomend it to anyone.

J33: neat, usable, robust, good & transparent sound.

17.03.2016
I was looking for a very neat sounding phono pre, especially to digitize vinyl. In the hifi area, there are extremely many different options, from 20? Up to about 10000? (!). One should probably go with the choice of the right price class - apart from the available budget - also according to the system used, ie a 20? Needle does not need 500? Preamp. In any case, many Hifi Phono-Pre's with often funny cables, unsightly external power supplies with thin cables and rather fragile, light-built housings are definitely not intended for outdoor inserts but for fixed installations at home, behind hi-fi furniture. After a few back and forth and with quite good experiences from other radial DIs in the back, I decided against a Hi-Fi preamp at the same price and for the J33 ("the" J33 because "she" is a DI box).

The box looks at first sight Radially typical robust, with a nice heavy housing with protected sockets and the arrangement of the cables is well thought out overall. (Only for the grounding screw one should have small fingers or a small screwdriver). The J33 also has an included power supply, but with a (red) cable with nice strong insulation, which should not be so fast tangled or broken.

As a plus you can also use the box with phantom power in the XLR outputs, which I think for my purposes super. For digitalizing, I will go into a good microphone preamp and the J33 with the presumably higher-quality current of the micro-preamp. (Many manufacturers offer optional high-quality power supplies for their Phono preamps, which then often cost again as much as the Phono-Pre. The problem should then probably be unnecessary, if one is quite elegant with phantom power from another good device With a proper built-in power supply, but I have not tried that yet.)

Now to the first sound impressions. AB comparisons were somewhat difficult, because I had to change the same record, with the same record player, of course, and so a direct back and forth switching was impossible.

In my img Stageline mpx-470 DJ Mixer, whose sound I really always liked, with headphones and a well-analogue recorded but rather flat / bland sounding production from the 70s from England, I noticed that the built-in phono pre my beloved DJ mixer against the J33 sounds harder and flatter. Especially an annoying part with tambourine and guitar guitar, the DJ mixer almost unbearably shrill in the ears and the J33 still in the frame, more differentiated and also with more definition in the bass. I have tried with different systems and at the approximately 100? Expensive Shure M97 was the difference doller to listen to than a classic Shure M44-7. Both styli sounded well through the J33. However, also background noise and odd-mixed snaredrum frequencies in the recording were more analytical, better and more three-dimensional in the elliptical needle with the J33 than in the phono preamp of the DJ mixer.
1: 0 for the J33.

In a fairly good HiFi system with built-in Phono-Pre of Denon was the force ratio however not quite so crass unequal or the playback not so obviously different. I would say, here it was more a question which sound and which timbre a taste better liked. Perhaps I know the sound of the system just better or it fit the plate, but I found that I was more "in" the music in there, than in the J33, but all beautifully clear and 3dimensional reproduced, especially synonymous untenrum, bassdrum Etc. Perhaps the electronics of the J33 but also something a bit confused, it is still new.

For me a good purchase. There is surely even better Phono preamps, but guaranteed no stage extractors with XLR outputs!
