ProCo Rat 2
16.03.2017
I remember wanting to buy one of these in the 80s (I should have as the originals are worth a fortune now). It is a very distinct sounding distortion, but I have to admit would challenge some very expensive boutique pedals attempting to do the same.

The tone control is not what can be described as subtle. At either end you are in 'muffled' sounding with no mid or top end and at the other end your ear drums being scraped out violently with rusty nail, with, as always the happy medium at 12 o'clock.

In terms of power DON'T FORGET TO PURCHASE THE ADAPTER or you will be stuck with using batteries.

There is also an extreme amount of distortion available up to and bordering on fuzz territory, and it is quite unique.

And then we come to the price, around 70¤ ...... how can you go wrong for this price. It is built like a brick (and also weighs like a brick) and totally over engineered being probably be one of the few remaining remnants of human civilization after the 3rd word war (it is built that well).

It gives you that classic 80s distortion and lets you re-live the drive sounds you remember from your youth, whilst helping you through mid-life crisis.

At the current market price, you have to have one in your gig bag. It is a must!

Nice n Gritty
Dave J, 21.05.2019
I found this pedal to be great for the use I had in mind, but I had to work at it.
Possibly not its original purpose, but I have put my Moog Mother 32 through this, so just a single oscillator synth but with adjustments of the Rat pedal and the synth, I was able to achieve a very nice gritty distortion to the synth sound that I was hoping to achieve.
The Rat pedal is very strong in construction, thick metal casing, good strong foot-switch and sturdy rotary controls.
Not a conventional power supply connection but the power units are available, a friend of mine found one on ebay.

My first reaction was meh... But still on my board
pacordes, 10.02.2019
My first reaction was meh... But some months after, I returned to this pedal and finally realized why it is so loved: great sustain, good mids and great crunch - you just have to know how to tweak the knobs but it's worth it! in the inside the soldering is not perfect, looks flimsy, but it hasn't failed me yet!

Classic tone
Heaventeo, 01.01.2019
Often copied, never the same. By this if you like vintage 80's or 70's tone. It is also very reliable. It is on my pedalboard for a very long time and it is ON every night.

Great for metal music.
Techno Witch, 11.07.2018
I use this in combination with my bass guitar.

The distortion at full setting is massive with very good mid & high.
There is a filter to darken the sound.
The volume control makes it easy to set the distorted volume at the same level as the dry signal.
Sturdy metal casing with outputs at the back.

I didn't find any negative aspects on this pedal for my use, but if you are looking for a gentle distortion, this may a bit too rough.

This is exactly what I wanted, it makes my bass sound like a growling metal monster.

Solid tank with sweet dirty juice
sad_horse, 15.01.2018
Nice disortion pedal, got familiar good old vintage disortion tone. It's really loud, loud in a good way. Huge sound, you can do a lot with this little box. Love my rat, rat with a solid body and warm soul. Can punch in your face madly, but can be very smooth and gentle, very versatile pedal. Got nice addition - glows in the dark, cool and smart.
Be wise, buy one, plug it and tweak it till morning. Solid, classy and raw pedal.
I 'm very very impressed, you could be too. Definitely worth more than this price.

One of my favourite pedals
Benni D., 03.10.2015
The Proco Rat is my favourite distortion pedal. It has so much more character than a lot of distortion pedals I've used before, and seems to provide a bite and crunch that other pedals simply cannot.

The Rat is big and mean sounding when cranking its distortion; but it doesn't have to be. With more controlled and dialled back distortion settings, you can get a wide range of tones out of this pedal.

I'm a big fan of the filter control on this pedal, which is essentially just a backwards tone knob, but it really lets you reel in and shape the distortion to how you want it to sound.

As well as being one of my favourite sounding pedals, The Rat is one of the most securely built pedals I have ever come across. It's built like a tank, and no amount of stomping or dropping it will likely cause it any harm.

What a monster!
TimValencia, 19.07.2017
I have ordered this product as part of a larger order and it arrived on time with great service fro Thomann.

What can I say about the RAT that has not been said before? Probably not much.

You can use it as overdrive, distortion and if you crank the gain up it even doubles as a Fuzz pedal. Not saying it is not nuanced. It is actually. With a little bit of gain and the the neck pickup you?ll be able to play some beautiful blues notes. A bit more power and you are in AC/DC regions and not far from Sabbath!

An absolute dream and must have of a pedal.

Also you can use it as a brick. It?s a sturdy metal box that can take a massive beating. Ready for the rowdy stage!

Whoever reads this! BUY BUY BUY!

Thes best distortion pedal i ever heard!
Zé Diogo Castro, 09.01.2016
I`ve been for about one year experimenting a lot of differents distortion pedals but, this is the one that i like the most! It?s just the sound that i was looking for!
I have a Vox Handwired Ac15 with bluesspeakers and the combination of the Proco Rat and the Vox it?s just perfect they pluged together it?s perfect!!
Even in a band situation the pedal show is very potential and you can really notify is presence! It?s is called a distortion pedal, but if you push it, it turn?s an excelent FUZZ!!
I love that pedal!!! I think it?s a must for everyone who have a Vox!!!!!!

Wicked
21.02.2017
This thing can do overdrive, distortion and fuzz even. And it does them all pretty good. You get a 5 year warranty from ProCo too. The filter sounds best before 12 'o clock and the distortion knob is where the tone really differs. It can go from Blues Driver type tone, to DS-1, to Big Muff almost (not quite fuzz fuzz but very very fuzzy distortion I suppose).

Would recommend, cant really see myself wanting any other dirt pedal besides a TS and Blues Driver maybe. That being said, putting a Tube Screamer in front of this makes it sound even better, I recommend that too

A Classic: from overdrive to Fuzz
01.11.2015
This the pedal that never leaves my pedal board, I own 2; one in front of the other.

its the most versatile overdrive, distortion, fuzz pedal ever!!!
I also use it to distort drum sounds and, beats get pretty dirty and creamy... so Synth players can also use it.

Fantastically versatile distortion box
Patrick5680, 19.05.2015
The current production version of the infamous ProCo RAT distortion pedal. Same 3 controls for volume, filter and distortion, same strength of enclosure (I.e. near indestructible).

I've heard a lot of people swear that the old RAT's with the LM308 chips in them sound superior. Having tried an early 80's and mid 90's RAT prior to this one, I can say that if there is a difference, it is barely perceptible, and certainly not worth paying extra for. Save yourself some money and snobbery by getting this.

Despite being marketed as a distortion box, the RAT is surprisingly versatile. With the gain rolled back and the volume cranked, you can get a cutting overdriven tone that sounds great.
With the gain midway you can get some pretty convincing Marshall distortion sounds. This area is where my RAT tends to live - distortion and filter at 1 o'clock, volume at 3 o'clock. Single note lines sound thick and have great sustain, and chords sound absolutely massive.
Cranking the gain can give you some pseudo-fuzz tones. I don't tend to use the pedal for this very often due to personal preference, but it does have its applications.

Speaking of applications, this pedal is perfect for live and recording. The pedal cuts some of your guitar's bass and boosts the mids a little (almost like a tubescreamer) - this guarantees you being heard in the mix, and you can use the fantastic sustain of the pedal without being drowned out (unlike the scooped Big Muff). If you want your low end left intact, the Turbo RAT would be a better option.

The only disadvantage for me was the nonstandard 9 volt jack. I needed to buy an adaptor, which was a bit of a pain. All in all though, I highly recommend this pedal

Excellent multipurpose distortion with some mids
09.04.2015
You can get anything from light Hendrix-style distrotion to heavy metal fuzz from this pedal. It's more of a fuzz than distortion but if you take your guitar mic volume down and take the distortion really down on the pedal, it can create just light buzz too. However, I got kind of tired with it when trying to play pop/rock and easier stuff, the distortion knob was always dialed to maybe 10%. It sound best when you really want to distort, something like Nirvana.

It has an EQ presence peak (the mids are somewhat accentuated) so it sounds good with a band, cuts through (people can make out the guitar).

Note that it uses a special power adapter, which sucks. You need a converter for typical power outlets.

Modern Classic?
Ste427, 16.03.2018
Not so modern but very classic. It's a must have for me in my pedalboard. From ligt od to blistering fuzz, it has it's own way to hit your amp input. I can't live without a Rat :)

Great Pedal
Aliput Duffwadle, 12.03.2018
I use this one in a chain after a TS-9 and really like the noise. You get can get a really tight sound in lower ranges if you play with the dials. The pedal is well built and has never let me down.
Sound is subjective and all I can really say is try it with your rig. If your into distortion you will have fun

Indestructible and Versatile
Shane E., 16.07.2013
I had my eye on a few distortion and fuzz pedals before i bought this particular one and took my time thinking of what would suit me best. I'm glad i chose this one, it is a really versatile pedal being able to blur the lines between straight up distortion and fuzz. The actual build quality is pretty great as well it's so strong i can't see how anything could ever put so much as a dink in the casing.

The knobs are very sensitive in changing the sounds so it is a fantastic choice for anyone who likes to dial in a specific tone for a wide variety of options.

Overall, I'd have to say this is a great buy for anybody in the market for a distortion/Fuzz pedal but can't decide which to go for.

That sound!
Gullardo, 22.06.2018
Great pedal with a great name.Domestic use, with different combo (small transistor and medium tube). The manufacture of the pedal is great, the sound is unique. Very warm sound, you can play a lot with the distortion and the filter.
It is a distortion, but a not very aggressive setting can make it sound as an overdrive; if you upset it, can sound like a fuzz.

Maybe you do not like the sound, or it does not suit with what you play, but give it a try!

ProCo Rat 2

What can I say, this pedal absolutely rocks. This pedal was what I was looking for, heavy duty, great sounding and all the beefy tone behind it. I play a lot of Sludge and Stoner music and this pedal is by far the best for it. Recommended!

Classic sound used on many records.
hsemog, 05.09.2017
When you plug this baby to your amp you can see why so many people use this pedal to this day.

Used on several records by famous artists this pedal lives to its expectations. From this pedal you can get from a nice overdrive to a crunchy distortion and even to a fuzz sound.
The EQ is very responsive and has a wide range, being mostly famous for its nice amount of mids.
This pedal at this price is a very good purchase. I recommend this pedal to everyone.

ProCo RAT 2 - awesome quality for money
Red Cavity Records, 21.11.2017
Maybe the best & most affordable distortion pedal around. Hard to get another distortion box better than this.

Great for guitars, bass and synthesizers, I use it with all these. It's also brilliant for stacking before a fuzz pedal or for boosting your tube amp in overdrive mode. My Orange Tiny Terror howls when cranked with the ProCo RAT 2, providing a great ammount of gain and also clarity. This pedal is also very silent, even at maximum distortion setting.

The build quality is great, it seems that this box is indestructible, high quality coated metal, very sturdy and great looking.

Highly reccomended, thank you Thomann for the always amazing service.

A "must have" distortion pedal!
03.05.2016
If you want that really agressive, grungy, muddy styled Sound of the 90's Seatle, this is a must have pedal. Its incredibly easy to use, with 3 classcal knobs:
- Distortion
- Filter (+bass; + treble)
- Volume (it has extremly high volume at max lvl)

It's not a beautifull pedal, mas who cares about that anyway..
It can get from indie overdrive tones to high distrorted, classical metal tones.

A must have!!
