Worth a go

BenP, 15.04.2014
I run a jazz collective at my school, and I bought this for anyone who wants to play a quick solo with our jazz trio. It's a handy selection of tunes, in a fairly easy to play arrangement. I have played in both the trio and as a soloist with the book and it's great fun.

Essential for anyone studying jazz

Whoever has none is himself to blame

El Guitarrero, 27.11.2009
The Real Book is definitely one of the most famous collection of jazz standards. All in all, it brings my bass version (6ths Edition) to 464 songs, which are colorful mixed over the entire jazz spectrum. It is important to note that this is an English-language edition, but this does not make any difference, apart from the fact that the notation is a bit different ("H" is "B").

What I personally find a bit of a pity is that the song selection is different than the Violin Real book. It can happen during the session that you have to look at the pianist's shoulders because the song is not in it. If you do not want to play the lines from the sheet, but basically only use the chords with additions, you should take into consideration the more widely used violin (normal) version. This would have the additional advantage that the page numbers are the same ... The book is sorted alphabetically and can be browsed comfortably by the spiral binding.

Conclusion: The realbook - no matter what version - basically belongs to the equipment of a jazz player (almost) just as much as the instrument.
