Pro-grade audio made in Berlin

The HEDD Type 05 MK2 is the German manufacturer's smallest studio monitor, but despite its compact dimensions, this two-way loudspeaker comes equipped with the same useful DSP features found in its larger siblings. Both the 5" low-mid driver and the 2" high‑frequency driver, which operates using folded‑diaphragm technology, are powered by their own dedicated 100W amplifier. With a frequency range extending from 45Hz to 40kHz, this monitor reveals more detail than many competitors in a comparable price bracket, plus – as with all the other monitors in the series – the bass reflex ports on this model can be sealed to achieve a tighter bass response. In addition, HEDD's Lineariser function allows producers using multiple units to optimise the phase linearity of their setup, even when their monitors are combined with a subwoofer.

A DSP with a deep feature set

The AD/DA converters that manage the DSP processing in each HEDD Type 05 MK2 operate at 96kHz and 32-bit resolution. This compact studio monitor also offers very versatile connectivity; it accepts analogue and two-channel digital signals in AES format via XLR connectors, and can pass the digital signal through to another speaker. An individual speaker can output the left or right channel of an incoming digital signal: When paired with a second unit to form a stereo setup, the system can achieve a maximum sound pressure level of 116dB SPL. The room-adjustment options here are also identical to those of the larger models. From adjusting the input level by ±12dB, to balancing lows and highs using shelving filters, even a desk filter: The HEDD monitors come with every feature even an experienced pro would expect to find.

Use it anywhere

The HEDD Type 05 MK2 measures 30cm in height and 18cm in width – that's slightly smaller than a sheet of A4 paper. And at just 6.4kg, this high‑end monitor is also noticeably lighter than many other studio loudspeakers with comparable audio quality. Home studio owners who want the best in terms of sound, features, and aesthetics can get their hands on a premium production tool with a truly exquisite sound here. Similarly, project studio operators looking to take their nearfield monitoring to the next level would also be well advised to take a closer look. If used in a professional recording studio, these speakers make a solid choice for outfitting an edit suite. Wherever it's put to use, owners of the HEDD Type 05 will all benefit from the MK2 version's new DSP features and broader range of room‑adjustment options.

About HEDD

The family-owned company HEDD Audio was founded in 2015 in Berlin, where it still manufactures its high-quality studio monitors, subwoofers, and hi-fi speakers, as well as headphones – or HEDDphones. The name HEDD stands for Heinz ElectroDynamic Design, after its founder Klaus Heinz (who also founded ADAM Audio); his son, who himself has a PhD in musicology, is now CEO. The company’s R&D work is based on their decades of experience, and its mission is to deliver outstandingly detailed sound and optimum signal quality. A whole host of renowned DJs and mastering engineers, including DJ Jazzy Jeff and Sascha "Busy" Bühren, swear by HEDD products for their day-to-day work.

Analyse the sound, monitor the mix

The HEDD Type 05 MK2 is ideal as part of a stereo pair – simply combine it with a second identical speaker. Of course, by adding a HEDD subwoofer, a pair of Type 05s can happily function as part of a 2.1 system, where users can sychronise the phase linearity optimisation with the subwoofer. Properly configured, this loudspeaker is capable of delivering truly first‑class monitor sound in acoustically optimised rooms; equally, even in rooms with minimal acoustic treatment, the Hedd Type 05's adjustment options will always help producers make the most out of what they've got. Either way, performance-wise it can handle almost every nearfield monitoring scenario with ease, from the analytical evaluation of the signal itself to the in-depth assessment of the final mix.
