Accurate & balanced sound: a quality near-field monitor

DimitriA, 10.09.2013
+ wooden box: great built quality
+ pronounced bass, no subwoofer required
+ plenty of power: can be used in large rooms
+ brutally honest and accurate sound: very easy to add EQ and reverb to a mix, you will hear things that you have not heard before
+ competitive price point (see Adam 7x)

- too heavy to attach to wall (a bad idea anyway since monitors are rear-ported for bass)
- flimsy plastic dial (but great LEDs)

x unkown: customer service

OVERALL IMPRESSION: great monitors for large rooms when subwoofer is not desired

Eve Audio SC208 - The Good-

Thomas C. 337, 20.07.2013
Optics / Processing:

The Eve Audio SC208 is well-processed. What does not come across the photos in the net are the modern rounded edges of the case. The boxes are quite large and completely fill the surface of a normal box stand. The knob for all settings is located at the front and is well processed but unfortunately made of plastic instead of eg. Alu, which diminishes the good impression somewhat.

That's why he "clacks" also unpleasantly cheaply when one presses it to jump into the menu. As said, only this selection button, the rest is impeccably built.

Service:

Since internally an A / D converter works should (as described in the manual) from the DAW
It is necessary to go out with maximum volume in order to feed it optimally. After the volume with the selector knob set. The LEDs are very meaningful and support one very well. However, the professional has eh a monitor before the box. Thus, one logically reduces the optimal loud signal from the DAW and goes thus quieter in the SC208 purely on which the A / D converter determines not optimal works. The first question marks arose.

Impression / sound:

The series dispersion is very low. I had a defective copy which was replaced by Thomann uncomplicated quickly. The replaced box sounded 1: 1 like the 4 days older that was already in the studio. No offset in the panorama, etc.

What immediately strikes you is the space-filling bass / sub bass.
Finally, producing without a subwoofer I thought ... Geil! (Had before
A Blue Sky System) My installed Basstraps in the studio had much to do but what is also good.

If I changed the release with a kick, the exact synonymous formed off (250 ms ... 500ms ...) ... great.

The first satisfied grin occurred. Also extensive listening to bass violin reference songs during the fairly short "Burn In" time was really fun. The highs were initially quite reserved (quite different from the A77x, for example, which I reviewed at Thomann.) After the run-in time, she got better out, but I nevertheless increased it by +2 to get more information.

The transients of the treble range are good and especially with distortion and if the clip with the recorded vocal they showed this up. But without the ears "to pain". "Fieses clipping what still sounds pleasant, but should not?" Another question mark appeared to me.

Stereo imaging and depth gradation, on the other hand, were good.

At least when I noticed that the lower centers (with me so 110HZ to 400HZ) were not really "fleshy + woody or knotty" went my grin strongly back.It is simply missing this certain directness, the shawl
Face when something happens or explodes. For example, the lower frequencies in women's voices (in recordings where I've always heard of them) NOT really shown .... I was shocked!
All sound signals on these monitors have also
A certain "maternally pathetic" patina ..... as if the built-in limiter of the box would always protect you from the worst and is constantly activated.

I'm sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.
Quite simply: They sounded quite good and acceptable by the bank, but almost OK !!! ... People, that was not at all!
The grin flew and I stuck the two SC208 after 16 days testing again and sent you back.

The SC208 really sounds too good and that is also their problem!
It absolutely needs a somewhat "cheaper" sound connection as a companion
Eg the Avantones or Behritones.

I finally decided for the Focal CMS65.

Greetings!
