Allen & Heath ZED-14

Lx Oreo, 18.12.2011
The ZED-14 is a similar small mixer from Allen & Heath. The input channels of the desk are named. 6 monocanals and 4 stereo channels, which are also available in mono. The two sockets per stereocanal (L / R) times 4, plus the 6 monocanals are therefore 14.
I build the rating according to the categories.

Service:
The operation of this desk is a bit more complex, since there is really a lot of routing / wiring possibilities. Starting with the entrance channels up to the many starting points. More on that later. The faders and knobs of the desk are neatly processed and bolted to the desk surface. The faders are designed for 100 mm, which is very rare for consoles of this price class. This makes an operation of the volume but very comfortable, since you can adjust the levels very fine. Very small changes in the volume are therefore possible. Of course you can also adjust the volume on most audio interfaces and the active boxes, but if you have a generally valid level for all devices (eg + 4dB) you can work with the faders really very well. The rotary potentiometers in the mono / stereo channels (EQ, AUX, PAN / Balance) are actually somewhat narrowly dimensioned. So you have to have a little bit of a fingertip. PFL and mute buttons are good to use, some features like phantom power (Attention: Turns PP on the whole panel) and stereolink switches on the AUX, as well as "to L / R bus switches" are recessed into the desk and you have to Use these with a pencil or similar. This makes sense, however, because one does not unintentionally push one of these switches. The console has a main power on / off on the back. The insertion of the cables is pleasant "crisp". Half plug-in position (eg for insert cable, "Stereo for Mono" keyword: tip, ring, sleeve) are neat to reach and convey good hold, without accidental pulling out.

Feaures:
As already mentioned, the 100 mm faders are one of the most striking features and are far superior to the 60 mm faders. It makes a huge difference. The mono / stereo channels are installed on individual circuit boards (instead of a single one for the whole console), that is, a repair is easier and there is no interruption on the part of the console. The connection sockets on the desk are from Neutrik, a quality company for electrical and electronic connection systems. The Main-Monitor LED meter displays speak quickly and precisely and are generously dimensioned.
A further plus are the many possibilities to get signals from the console in and out. There is a stereo-out, an ALT-out in stereo, 4 AUX sends, the first two can be used in stereo, a mono-out (subwoofer), main-out's in XLR-form, 1 insert Per monokanal and a further stereo return and a 2 TRK return (both in stereo, above the stereo channels). These and the already mentioned mono / stereo channels offer a lot of possibilities for the studio setup. There is also a USB input / output, but I do not use.

Sound:
The sound is awesome in my setup. I use RME HDSP 9632 as I / O and KRK Rokit G2 RP8 as main monitors. For this purpose, I have two passive KEFs connected to an amp as ALT monitors, and this is connected to the console. I think it comes on the equipment to which one is used. As a direct comparison I can take my old Behringer-Pult (which was much smaller). The EQ's in the ZED-14 are pleasantly appealing and do not seem to twist the signal unnecessarily even with large +/- values. The noise-to-noise ratio is very good at least I hear a very low noise with high-drawn faders, which does not bother me, since no music runs. If the music is running, or I am going to a project, I can rely on it, no matter where I make changes, whether on the console or in the software, that the console gives the sound so synonymous.

Processing:
The processing is top! Right at the unpacking I noticed the foam padding, which the desk during transports much better protect than the cheap Styropor. All elements on the desk are screwed to the surface, the jacks are from Neutrik, nothing wobbles or rattles and the labels are straight and clean. There are no sharp or dirty edges, the pressure points of the switches are great. The luminaires are sufficiently bright and the desk is classy and stable.

Total:
A new desk had to come, and after a long search I found exactly the right desk. The ZED-14 is a super desk, and in the price class in my opinion the best thing there is. Other consoles also have their advantages and are often called by names, but with this console the overall picture is the same as any other. On all levels, great work was done here and an "exchange is impossible."

A really cool desk for smaller Buget

Marvin832, 01.10.2013
We as amateurband were looking for a new mixer. It should be easy for live recordings. after a long time wondering whether mackie, behringer or allan and heath I decided then for this (alone because of the 100 mm faders :-))
In live use and to recorden it has done super good services and makes them even more.
The equalizer is enough for us and the bikes bring no annoying noises.
just as ingenious I find the scorched push buttons for phantom power and other. so you can not change something from time to time.

something bothered me but unfortunately this is my own fault ... that the US edition only stereo contains. I would have been happy about at least 4 ausgängsbuse .. but as I said reading helps in this case ^^

5 * from my side.
