Functional tool

I have used this to tune the piano at home, first time ever tuning a piano.

I found that piano hammers could vary greatly in price, so I settled for this which is neither cheap nor expensive.

This hammer comes with three different heads that should fit most pianos.

As a whole, the hammer is quite massive, does not flex too much and will hopefully last a long time.

However, the metal sleeve that covers one end of the wooden grip came off quite quickly and I had to jam it in place.
Also the threads that the head screws onto need a little threadlock to keep from rotating.

Good:
- Solid enough for tuning
- Not crazy expensive
- Multiple heads

Bad:
- Loose fit of the metal sleeve

Though many would be put off by the parts being loose, the materials of this tuning hammer are of good quality and ensure a good turning response.

A good hammer makes tuning easier.

After deciding to tune my old piano on my own I first tried a low-budget solution from Amazon. The hammer did not exactly transmit my movements to the tuning screws of the piano and the results where therefore kind of poor and frustrating.
After switching to the K&M device even I could create an accceptable tuning for my piano.
The pro's will go for pro quality anyway, if you are a do-it-yourself guy like me, go at least for the K&M 167 or coonsider even more high end tools and avoid saving money here. You'll pay the price later with bad results, more frustration, wasted time, or buying a second device later.
If you are a beginner, make sure to order also the required muting tools (felt, wedges, ...).

I bought it as an amateur piano player to tune the occasional out-of-tune string on my upright Kawai. The tool is of good quality and will do the job if you’re not a demanding professional, in which case I’d imagine you’d be looking for something more expensive. Not that you couldn’t do the full tuning with it - I did just that on several occasions, I’m just saying that pros have their own specialty tools. I showed it to my piano tuning professional, and he didn’t have anything against me doing it on my own.
