This drum dial comes with a hard case which includes the dial itself, a glass plate for calibration, and guide for tuning the drums. All are packed neatly in foam protection, and the packaging gives off certain quality.
The tuning process using this dial is easy. First put it on the glass plate and calibrate it. Then consult the chart and tune until you have reached the desired tension. In darker environments you can turn on the light to help you see the display. Though you must remember to turn the light off after use, as the light switch is on separate circuit from the rest of the device.
The batteries last long on the dial, although in heavy use eventually they have to be replaced. This is in contrary to any analogue dial, but there has to be a price paid for the level of accuracy.
For me it has become an indispensable tool in daily studio work, and unless I know the drummer can tune his kit by ear or he has some other (good) preference, I will grab this thing, and tune the kit for him. A couple of tunings per session is what I usually do, as this gives great and consistent sound throughout the recording.
In the end, this is one of those small, but crucial things for me as a studio technician. More important than having U87s on the overheads as this is the key for consistent and great sound.
