Hohner Chromonica Xpression 48 C

i bought the Xpression 48 because i needed a second chromatic, next to my Hohner Super 64 Performance - of which i am rather protective - to carry with me wherever i go, so i can practice and play whenever i want, and as a spare instrument in case i run into a problem with my Super 64. it doesn't sound as good as the Super 64 - especially for ballads and mellow tunes - but for a regularly priced chromatic you get good value for your money.
the response is good and fast. the straight tuning and short slider action adds to that. the sound is crisp and quite loud for a 'small' chromatic. i had to get used to a strong slider spring again, but that didn't bother me, nor did it really hinder my playing.
although a light and compact instrument, it feels like one smooth solid block of music machine. it sits really good and comfortable in the hands ... much better than my old Toots' Hard Bopper. no sharp edges or angles. no screwheads in the way. and no metaly taste from the copper reed plates because the covers line-up seamlessly with the wide mouthpiece.
the mouthpiece has a semi-circular shape with a large radius ... the perfect shape to support a good embouchure and ideal for a beginner harmonica player. the holes are square with rounded corners and edges. although i am used to a trapezoidaly shaped mouthpiece with round holes, i was pleasantly surprised by the smooth feel combined with the added ease of playing solid single notes.
if i have to add a minus: cross-headed 'parker' screws would have been much easier than having to juggle with a flat screwdriver and risk scratching your instrument while doing maintenance.

Ein neues Chromonica-Modell von Hohner? Das muss ich einfach ausprobieren...

Bisher habe ich eine 270/48 C- Deluxe und eine Hard Bopper Chromonica von Hohner, die ich beide sehr gerne spiele. Allerdings habe ich bei der Hard Bopper das Mundstück der Deluxe montiert, das Standard-Mundstück ist mir zu scharfkantig.
Ich spiele seit etwa drei Jahren chromatische Mundharmonika und würde mich als fortgeschrittenen Anfänger bezeichnen. (Musikalische Grundlagen waren vorhanden.)

Die Xpression 48C wird in der üblichen Kunststoffbox mit edel wirkender Beschriftung geliefert, die neben dem Instrument ein Reinigungstuch enthält. Eine Beschreibung und ein Gutschein (für einen Online-Kurs?) waren ebenfalls im Umkarton enthalten.

Mein Exemplar lies sich auf Anhieb problemlos spielen, die Ansprache in allen Kanälen ist einwandfrei und die Stimmung für meine Ohren sehr gut. Zur Optimierung habe ich einige Lösabstände an meine Vorlieben angepasst, das halte ich aber für völlig normal (und ist nicht zwingend notwendig). Die Ventile funktionieren bisher ohne jede Beanstandung.

Den Klang finde etwas lauter und voller als den der Deluxe, ich denke er ist sehr ähnlich zur knapp 50 EUR teureren Hard Bopper. Im Gegensatz zu den beiden erwähnten Chromonicas hat die Xpression einen Kanzellenkörper aus Kunststoff.

Durch die tief gezogenen Abdeckungen wird das Instrument zum wahren Handschmeichler. Es gibt keine scharfen Kanten, sie liegt hervorragend in der Hand und auch bei längerem Spiel gibt es keine Druckstellen an der Hand.

Der Schieber ist sehr leichtgängig und leise, die Federkraft scheint etwas geringer zu sein als bei meinen anderen Chromonicas, was ich als sehr angenehm empfinde.

Die Gleiteigenschaften des Mundstücks sind ebenfalls hervorragend und etwas besser als bei meinen anderen Chromonicas. Leider sind die Kannten der Löcher ein wenig schärfer als beim Deluxe-Mundstück, aber deutlich besser als beim Standard-Mundstück (aus diesem Grund habe ich einen Stern bei der Verarbeitung abgezogen). Nach einigen Tagen bemerke ich die Kanten allerdings nicht mehr, offenbar habe ich die Haltung unbewusst etwas verändert. Die stärkere Rundung empfinde ich als sehr angenehm.

Für mich ist die Xpression eine sehr gute Neuerung bei den chromatischen Mundharmonikas und könnte mein bisheriges Lieblingsinstrument (die 270/48 Deluxe) vom Thron verdrängen. Dass sie für den gleichen Preis wie diese vertrieben wird gefällt mir sehr gut.

Ich habe den Kauf nicht bereut und würde sie auf jeden Fall wieder kaufen.

I’m very skeptical about all the claims being made on a new Harmonica!
So when I ordered the XPression it had to pass the test on three criteria’s!
1. Silent Slider
2. Airtight
3. The design of the mouthpiece
When arrived - it passed all thee in flying colours!
The mouthpiece is pure Art!
Round on the outside - SQUARE holes on the inside!!! 👍!!!!
The X maybe similar to the 270 and Toots Mellowtone but that’s where it stops!
The spring on the X is civilized - not impossible like on the other two!
It’s an excellent harp and I now use it exclusively to practice on Antonio Serrano’s “Harmonica Rag” by Toots!
