Suono caldo e morbido

Ormai uso abitualmente i plettri Dunlop Primetone, sia il 3mm, sia il 5mm.
Fra i due preferisco il 5mm che ha un suono leggermente più caldo e morbido rispetto al 3mm.
Il primo "contatto" con questo spessore di plettro può disorientare, ma vale la pena di spendere un poco di tempo per esercitarsi con questo plettro ed abituarsi al suo impatto con la corda.
Con questo plettro ho scoperto sonorità che sono negate ai plettri più sottili.

Can see the attraction - but not for me

I play mandolin and prefer heavy stiff picks - eg Jazztone 208s, Big Stubby 3mm. So obviously I had to try these. Alas they would require a new and completely different right and left hand technique to be playable on mandolin for anything other than strumming 4 note chords - and even that requires a very different approach to the normal.

There are two problems -1. basically mandolin strings are too close together in their pairs and between their courses for these very, very thick picks to strike cleanly. The only way to get a decent sound is to strike the strings very much harder than with a normal pick and it's also necessary to pull off / mute slightly with the fretting hand. Which brings us to problem - 2. the sound is very, very dark, thumpy, like palm-muting - it doesn't ring at all. I guess this could be fine for chording in some styles of music (maybe for a bluegrass chop) but it's not really something many ( if any ) players are likely to want for melody playing. It certainly won't help if you want to sound like a Gypsy Jazz player.

Having got all that off my chest I can see why an acoustic or electric jazz player or indeed a bass would like these. They are very solid in the hand - won't slip at all and at the same time are silky, smooth and fast on the strings.

No edge, no attack

This is one of the most useless picks to play electric guitar or bass, especially for metal. No attack, no definition - avoid!

The only good application for this pick is a person who just started playing acoustic guitar with metal strings (with all 6 string strumming patterns) - picks glides across the string effortlessly - it's impossible to bury it between strings.

Dunlop makes a lot of great picks - if you strive for sharp, precise, crisp attack - try out Dunlop SHARP - 0,88 or 0,73. It will also improve your technique and speed.

Gypsy jazz picks

I wanted to use these for gypsy jazz.
They're a very good pick for this purpose, good and thick with a nice point and excellent grip.
The only drawback is that they don't come in a left-handed version so I had to get out my files.
