Arturia KeyLab Essential 49 MK3 Alpine

I’d like to start with a Big Thank you to Thomann for their exceptional packaging!
They did a great job wrapping the original box inside another one, ensuring it arrived safely, even if the couriers weren’t too gentle with it.
As for the Arturia, I’m not an expert, but as a beginner, I find it absolutely amazing. Whether you're using it for music production or just having fun with a MIDI keyboard, it delivers a fantastic experience. The endless rotary knobs feel great to the touch and provide smooth control, while the faders also have a satisfying, responsive feel. The keys are well built, offering a nice touch and smooth operation.
The small display is incredibly handy, allowing you to navigate and control everything directly from the keyboard without needing a mouse. Overall, this is a great and affordable product from Arturia.
One of the biggest highlights is the included software bundle, you pay just $200 and get an impressive selection of software, including Arturia Pro, which alone costs as much as the keyboard.

Arturia macht mit ihren Controllern vieles richtig. Es gibt bi-direktionale Kommunikation über das MCU/HUI Protokoll, z.B. für die Anzeige von Preset-Namen. Auch gibt es sogar Scripte für Sonderlinge wie Bitwig, wobei diese wohl schon veraltet sind. Das Controller sieht auch schick aus.

Nun komme ich aber zu dem grossen Manko, der Tastatur: Die ist insgesamt schlecht. Die Tasten sind horizontal wabbelig, die Velocity-Werte fangen bei 20 meist an, darunter so gut wie nie. Dann ist der Hub so seltsam, dass - wenn man sanft spielt - man eine Taste drücken kann, ohne dass Velocity gesendet wird. Und je weiter oben man die Tasten spielt, desto schlechter funktioniert es. Die Aufhängung und die anscheinend die Positionierung der Sensoren ist also nicht gelungen. Habe es direkt mit dem semi-pro Controller Roland A-49 verglichen: Mk3 hat gegen das A49 keine Chance. Und ich würde das A49 jetzt nicht als grandios spielbar bezeichnen.

Ich bleibe hier inzwischen nur noch ratlos zurück... Warum stellt Arturia (sowie auch andere Hersteller) Controller her, an denen irgendwo derart eingespart wird, dass sie nicht mal minimalen Standards entsprechen? Das ist weder nachhaltig noch sonstwie sinnvoll. Warum nicht dann 40 Euro teuer, dafür aber solide? Welche schief gewickelten Hirne in der R&D oder Marketing Abteilung denken sich sowas aus? Ich glaube, die Welt hat inzwischen genug "Schrott"- oder Einwegprodukte. Der Fokus sollte endlich Richtung Qualität und Nachhaltigkeit gehen. Auf unsere Regierungen können wir da leider nicht hoffen, sind sie ja Teil des Problems. Die Verantwortung liegt also in den Firmen, den Verursachern selbst.

Es ist nicht alles schlecht am Controller. Die Drumpads sind durchaus ganz gut. Und Arturia schafft es ja immerhin, den Benutzer nicht völlig in eine proprietäre Welt einzusperren, wie z.B. Native Instruments. Immerhin werden offene Protokolle benutzt. Trotzdem sind auch Arturias Controller besonders auf Arturia-Softsynths ausgelegt, es gibt einen speziellen Arturia-Modus, bei dem dann - natürlich - alles nahtlos OOTB funktioniert. Aber man hat immerhin die Wahl.

Fazit: Sehr guter Ansatz, leider an der Hardware an der falschen Stelle sinnlos eingespart.
