Avoid permanently damaging your vintage bass truss rod nut... use this
It's more or less an expensive screwdriver at first glance. You can also look at things from a different perspective, as I'm assuming the reason you're even considering getting this tool is because you have a £1000+ guitar/bass in your possession at the moment.
Now, with most of the above type instruments, you can constantly have to separate the neck from the body everytime you need to make adjustments to the truss rod. You will know by now that's a pretty risky activity for such a small task. A more precarious alternative is getting any wide flat-head driver and attempt at turning that old, rusty, truss rod nut while the said driver sits at an angle. The last activity basically will render the nut useless in one careless swoop.
The Cheater rod means you don't have to take that chance. It's exactly machined so it sits exactly in the middle of that cross. Suddenly, spending £10 isn't that extravagant anymore.

Nothing special - just a long driver
I have 3 vintage guitars with truss-rod key in at the heel of the neck. I bought this for those. Not sure why others are happy with it. This 'Cheater' has no cheat! The tip also easily wear off if you're not very carefully insert it to the slot. So, nothing special about the material quality either. The handle has a nice feeling to it.
Any long shaft screwdriver with a big handle can do the same job.

Amazing tool!
This special screwdriwer is absolutely a must if you have a Fender Strat/Tele American Vintage series as it will allow you to set the perfect neck relief reaching the trussrod nut without removing the neck from the body.
Probably you'll just need to lower your neck pickup and/or slightly move out the pickguard to have enough room.
No cons, just pros. It's a precious time-saver. Highly recommended.
