Friedman Boutique Goodness!
I own two Friedman pedals at the moment and I must say I really like the quality, the sound and the practicality!
The sound of the Smallbox pedal is phenomenal! With the low gain-high gain switch on the side it resembles the Smallbox amp’s two channels. It has the old school modded plexi sound but it can also go up to more modern high gain sounds! Not as high gainy as the BEOD but almost!
When I say that this has the plexi sound I then mean a modded plexi. The sound is more polished and smooth than an ”unmodded” plexi. I personally love the sound. It is a satisfying sound!
Now there are a few different ways how you can use these. I personally run these into a clean channel on an amp and let the pedal emulate the Friedman Smallbox sound. They integrate themselves really nicely into almost any amp and they don’t feel like pedals - they feel more like a different channel on the amp! You can run these into the fx return on your amp, I have tried this but I prefer to have them running into the clean channel instead. Caution: I recommend checking tutorials on youtube if you plan to run them or other pedals into your amp’s fx return! Protect your ears and know what you are doing so you don’t harm your hearing or your equipment!
You can also use the pedal as a booster if you set it in the low gain mode! It fattens up the tone and pushes the amp really nice!
It is a fantastic pedal! I can’t think of anything negative about it. Sure you could say it is pricey but you get a lot for the money - a booster and amp emulation!
