Generally happy with the product
Main trigger for ordering the Antelope DC4 SC was the bundle deal that included the Antelope edge solo mic and the effects bundle worth of 1kEUR to start-up the journey of using modelled studio gears. I have been using the mic now for tracking guitars and vocals and it works fine. I have only AKG414 to compare the modelled version vs original and it sounds quite authentic. Playing with different mic types with main/backing vocals brings some extra tones to the recordings for sure. Edge solo is good all around microphone to perform recordings.
As Thomann does not allow to write review for the B-stock orders (as my AA DC4), I have included the DC4 review to this mic review :)
I purchased M1 Macbook air to be my 2008 MacBook Pro follower. Focusrite disappointed me with very bad customer support (no driver updates for their firewire sound cards which I own) I spend many nights searching what would be my follow-up sound card to perform home recordings and band recordings.
UAD was one of the candidates but the smaller units with price tag under 1500 EUR are some how limited regarding the IO and processing power. Using the UAD plugins basically requires purchasing of satellite unit if you want to do some serious mixing. Friend of mine who has UAD solo told that using the Marshall emulation takes alone 50% of the processor power.
Antelope audio was soon at the top list of candidates due to the
1) support of USB and Thunderbolt2 (I’m able to use also with old laptop + with my new M1 donglebook with TB3 to TB adapter as AFX2DAW is supported only by TB (please see the end of the review too)
2) having the internal FPGA / DSP that is able to perform serious mixing without running out of resources. No need to purchase external calculation power units like UAD requires the satellites.
3) 4 pcs of high quality preamps to be able to record guitar, keyboard and vocals at once + the ADAT connection. I have ADAT card with 8 preamps which I use to record drums.
4) the unit is portable and I can easily take it with me and play even guitar with it as the effect bundle includes modelled guitar amps and cabinets. Nice feature to use during short summer cottage trips when you do not want to carry lots of gears with you. You can easily record a song of riff ideas with decent sounding guitar amps.
Antelope Audio sound quality was highly praised by the users and indeed it’s very good after couple of weeks experience. Antelope clearly has better preamps than my Focusrite sound cards.
When I received the unit I tested the Antelope Audio product support and yes, they serve their customers well. They have even Teamviewer support to connect to your computer in case the issue checking requires it. Thumbs up. I have never received such a good support from other equipment manufacturers.
My only complain for Antelope at this moment is, that the AFX2DAW is not working on M1 Macbook. When I contacted the Antelope service, they informed me that please follow their news page but they did not give any schedule when it will eventually be released and working on M1 platform. Please speed up the development so I can use the great plugins also within the Logic Pro X, thanks :)
