Fishman Fluence Tosin Abasi Set 8 BK

Come tutti i potenziali acquirenti di questi pickup, anche voi che state leggendo la presente recensione immagino abbiate visto e letto decine di recensioni in giro per il web e soprattutto messo a confronto con altre marche e modelli di pickup ad otto corde.
Io ritengo che probabilmente non ci sia un pickup migliore o peggiore a parità di segmento, ma tutto dipende dai gusti musicali.
Personalmente io suono generi trash metal ed il mio dubbio era tra questi e gli emg 808, eventualmente gli 808x. Inoltre essendo possessore e avendo quindi provato altri pickup, anche passivi, proverò a fare un confronto con questi per chiarirvi le idee.
Cosa aspettarsi: vengono proposti come il giusto compromesso tra attivi e passivi. Effettivamente, parlando del pickup al ponte, contrariamente agli Emg, e io posseggo gli 81 per 6 corde, non hanno quel suono gonfio, pompato,
che rende le note "rotonde", il suono compresso ma non saturo, che soprattutto sugli accordi non "graffia" non è "affilato", "sharp" tecnicamente "mancanza di headroom", ovvero che con molto segnale tende ad appiattire ma rende molto bene sugli arpeggi in palm muting, comunque riprendendo il filo, contrariamente ad essi hanno un suono molto saturo, graffiante, "affilato", che soprattutto sugli accordi, anche con la più potente delle distorsioni rende perfettamente distinguibile ogni singola nota. D'altra parte parte, però, sugli arpeggi in Palm muting tipo KSE perdono corposità. A scanso di equivoci, pur esaltando questa caratteristica degli emg, gli emg rimangono più sporchi, più "muddy", quindi meno chiari e articolati. Riprendendo il discorso sui fishman, il suono non è affatto sottile come riportato in alcune video recensioni, ma al contrario, pur essendo pubblicizzati come compromesso tra attivi e passivi vi garantisco che il suono è molto "vitaminizzato", spinto, compresso, forse anche di più degli stessi Emg, pur riuscendo a mantenere caratteristiche di saturazione e articolazione tipiche dei passivi. Questo caratteristiche vengono accentuate maggiormente selezionando il voice 2, ma come già ho detto il timbro è lontano da quello che può essere ad esempio, si un dimarzio illuminator che ha un timbro molto più naturale e fedele, essendo ovviamente un passivo, che però è meno pulito e forte. A onor del vero, sui suoni puliti, il voice 2 può fare dimenticare che si sta suonando un attivo, il suono è molto fedele a quello di un passivo, ma in distorsione /hi gain ribadisco di no. Prendendo a riferimento alcune video recensioni effettivamente il voice 1, in background da la situazione di un effetto come una sorta di wah ma non è assolutamente nulla di fastidioso, è proprio il timbro. Come pubblicizzato, i pickup sono totalmente liberi da noise, si può completamente fare a meno del noise reductor/suppressor ecc. Sugli assoli e note singole sono impressionanti, le note sono perfettamente separate e pulite, sia sul pickup al ponte, ma in maniera più evidente con quello al manico. È un piacere fare shreds e sweep picking, ti danno la sensazione di essere diventato più bravo e pulito nell'esecuzione. Tornando ai puliti, parlando di del voice 3, al ponte sembra quasi di suonare un piezo, il suono è eccezionale, cristallino, pulito, selezionando a metà tra i due pickup o quello al manico sembra più naturale / quello di un magnetico ma mantiene l'ineccepibile pulizia, cristallinità e risonanza. Altro aspetto molto importante, è che lavorando anche solo su metà Humbucker, il segnale come intensità rimane invariato, quindi non hai l'effetto collaterale di un passivo dove il suono si assottiglia e perde di intensità. Personalmente ho adoperato la configurazione con selettore 3 vie + 2 push pull per voice 1/2 e bypass voice 3. Tosin Abasi preferisce il 5 vie Con la posizione 4 che seleziona tra ponte e manico entrambi splittati e lo usa anche in distorsione. Personalmente raramente uso split in distorsione, comunque col ponte splittato effettivamente si avvicina al suono fender rock anni 80/90.
Parliamo di controllo qualità. Su uno dei push pull, solo a montaggio avvenuto da parte del mio liutaio di fiducia, mi sono accorto che non funzionava il fine corsa. Quindi in apertura passava da volume massimo al minimo e viceversa in chiusura passava da minimo al massimo. Tramite il mio liutaio abbiamo risolto il problema serrando la carcassa ed in generale tutti i particolari del potenziometro in questione e sembra funzionare bene. In ogni caso ho segnalato la questione all'assistenza thomann ma è prevista la sostituzione dell'intero articolo e considerando che, almeno per me e tutti i profani, per montaggio e smontaggio serve l'intervento, chiaramente a titolo oneroso, di un liutaio, si fa prima e si spende meno a comprarlo a parte e non a farselo sostituire. In ogni caso questa piccola sbavatura del non inficia il voto finale che per me è massimo. Infine i pickup sono stati montati su di una Harley benton 8 corde Fanned Fret, versione neck through del 2018, quella con i pickup con i poli angolati, ovviamente si è reso necessario allargare e sagomare la sede dei pickup. Il manico è misto acero / nyatoh e le ali del corpo in tiglio. Tastiera roseacer, che è un acero trattato ed imbrunito. Concludo: me la sento di suggerire l'acquisto? Sì, pienamente, anche se siete sostenitori dei passivi o di altri tipi di attivi, questi pickup non vi deluderanno mai, potrà non piacervi il tono, il timbro, l'impronta, ma l'effettiva qualità audio c'è, si sente, ed è effettivamente di misura superiore sia agli emg, sia ad un dimarzio di alto livello come un illuminator. È un'innovazione a tutti gli effetti e propone una varietà di suoni molto molto versatile, dai puliti cristallini agli higain più spinti. Tuttavia se cercate la naturalezza di un passivo vero o il suono inequivocabile del trash degli emg, vi consiglio di andare su questi altri. Purtroppo non posso fare paragoni con altre Marche e modelli tipo seymour duncan, bare knuckle, ecc. In quanto non ne possiedo o comunque non ho mai avuto modo di provarli.

I bought this set I had been looking at for a long while to replace the EMG 808's I previously had on my Schecter Hellraiser C-8 Special (26.5" scale). The EMG's were really muddy on the low end so I needed something to bring my guitar alive.

What follows is mostly my personal opinion, based on my gear, my taste and experience with the instrument, so take it with a grain of salt.

Pro's:
- Two Voicings + Coil Split gets you plenty of options to play with.
- The above applies to both cleans and overdriven tones.
- Lots of clarity on distortion compared to EMG's.
- Great cleans, versatile, warm, again, plenty of options at the ready.
- Alnico Neck, great for leads and warm round cleans.
- Ceramic Bridge, great for aggressive metal riffs and leads alike.

Cons:
- Do they deliver the best of both worlds (active/passive) ?
No they don't, it's for sure a great improvement and addition to the world of active pickups, and a very different take on active pickups if you will, but they still sound very much active.
- Yes, you do get a lot of clarity but not as much as I had hoped for.

Conclusion:
When I was looking for pickups, my initial idea was to get a set of Nazgul and Sentient pickups, but the price was well above 300 euros, while this Abasi set was 260 Euros. The 100 Euros difference surely played a role in my choice.
I had anyways been always curious about Fishman pickups and the hype around them, especially the Tosin Abasi models for obvious reasons, so in the end I went for this.

Would I buy them again?
Not sure, I was after the classic Meshuggah tone, and I didn't really get there at all. Obviously, I understand that part of my disappointment must originate in my guitar due to the relatively "short" scale for an 8 strings (26.5") and the mahogany body.
However, in all honesty, if I would have to choose again, I would have rather saved up a little longer and get the Seymour Duncan's I wanted initially.

Should you buy it ?
Well it depends on several factors as you can imagine.
They won't make miracles, your guitar (woods) is still a crucial factor in this equation, so scale length and woods is something you wanna keep in consideration.
Bottom line, if you have a guitar that already sounds pretty sharp on its own (swamp ash typically), AND, you are looking into refreshing and cleaning up your tone, AND, you like actives and want different sound option ready, then yeah, these pups will get you deliver greatly.
If you are looking for something that won't sound active, then this product is not for you, in such case you should just go for a good set of passive pickups.

They are fairly priced and deliver their promise, plus the price is kinda great.

For some reason, the ones on Tosin's guitar sounds much beter but it might be him.
Something must be said about this pick ups:
The reputation they have come with a reason, This where my first set of fishman pick ups.
They where installed on a 7 string fanned fret guitar even when this pick ups are for 8 strings.
This pick ups are made of railings therefor are suitable for 7 and 8 string fanned fret guitars or for 8 string regular guitars.
The sound clarity its impressive.
Im tunned on drop G and it picks them chugs and low ends in general, PERFECTLY. They are completely Clear and produce a very pristine sound.
Being active pick ups, the sustain its wonderful and I have read that the battery lasting its about 300 playing hours which its quite decent.
Used with overrdive its a magical trip, but the clean tones are rich and solid, even when used as Split coil.
I can recommend this pick ups so much that I have bough another set for another 7 string guitar I have.
Very satisfied.
TLDR:
-VERY good pick ups
-Fit on 7 string fanned fret (soapbar-pickup style) cavity guitars.

I have Ibanez RGIX28FEQM which was equipped with EMG 808.
Well as I don't have anything against EMG the ones that were build in guitar were pretty bad sounding to my ear. With Fishmann it war instant uprade. Low F# string was sounding really tight and fat. I was about to sell the guitar before I got Fishmans, but they just gave new life to this guitar. It made me play the hell out of it. And the clean ! Oh man the cleans are so brilliant and beauty I couldn't believe it.

Pros:
Thight gain sounds
Beautiful clean sounds
They can be splitted to single coils
All hardware except for switch is in the box

Cons:
Could be a little bit cheaper

I would recommend them for everybody that uses 8 string guitar and wants to try some other pickups.
