Chester Bennington defined the Sound of Linkin Park
In 1999, Chester Bennington joined the band that would later become Linkin Park. At the time, it still went by the name Xero and shortly afterwards, Hybrid Theory. The breakthrough was not long in coming. Just one year later, Linkin Park released their debut album “Hybrid Theory”, which became a huge global success with hit songs such as “In the End”, “Crawling”, and “One Step Closer”. With his powerful chest voice, Chester Bennington was able to reach up into the fifth octave, even outshining Freddie Mercury. As a victim of abuse, Chester Bennington suffered from deep emotional scars throughout his life. He lost his lifelong struggle on 20 July 2017 when he died by suicide. The music world was deeply shocked, having lost a role model and rock singer whose openness and honesty had inspired and encouraged countless people around the world.
Linkin Park as never-resting Crossover Pioneers
Linkin Park were true pioneers and played a formative role in nu metal, alternative rock, and metal from the very beginning. Their music was and is characterised by a crossover of rock, hip-hop, and electronic elements. Stagnation seemed to be a foreign concept to them. Over the years, their sound evolved from a harder style to more experimental, electronic, and pop influences. And it struck a chord: since the turn of the millennium, Linkin Park have been one of the most successful bands of all time. While Chester Bennington’s voice and performance are a big part of this, the other band members are also known for their high level of skill on their instruments and their signature sound. And the band continues: since 2024, Emily Armstrong from the band Dead Sara has officially been the new singer of Linkin Park, carrying the band into the future.
Linkin Park’s Gear: from Mystery to well-known Facts
Not much is known about creative mastermind Mike Shinoda’s preferred equipment, whether it be keyboards, guitars, or vocals. He tends to keep these things to himself. Not so iconic guitarist Brad Delson. It’s no secret that he likes Paul Reed Smith electric guitars, especially the Custom 24. He also played a PRS during the Hybrid Theory era, namely a CE24. When it comes to amps, Brad Delson relies on the Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier, which has also been available as a three-channel Triple Rectifier since 2001. He prefers robust and reliable pedals, mainly from Boss. Brad uses the NS-2 Noise Gate to suppress unwanted background noise from the amp. He also uses a pair of CS-3 compressors (with different settings) and various other pedals from time to time.
Constantly pushing Boundaries
Chester Bennington and Linkin Park have repeatedly broken down genre boundaries, from impressive rap metal hits to forays into pop. It was obvious that they didn’t want to be forced into a pigeonhole. In fact, none of their albums were comparable to the previous ones. While this sometimes drew criticism from critics, most fans were happy that the band didn’t succumb to eternal commercial monotony. “Papercut” – 2001
Chester Bennington considered “Papercut” to be “the identity of the band” and regarded it as his favourite Linkin Park song. The explosive opening track of their groundbreaking debut album Hybrid Theory set new standards for metal in the new millennium. “In the beginning, my whole goal was to bring as much melody as I could to the music,” said Chester Bennington.

“In the End” – 2001
Chester Bennington was never convinced by “In The End”, a single from “Hybrid Theory”. In fact, he didn’t even want it to appear on the album. Fortunately, he didn’t get his way. The song reached number two on the Billboard charts, giving Linkin Park their best ranking on the Hot 100.

“Faint” – 2003
Delicate strings accompany hard-hitting riffs on “Faint”, the second single from “Meteora”, and Chester Bennington’s lyrics make the song both impressive and deeply emotional: “Don’t turn your back on me. I won’t be ignored.” Written by mastermind Mike Shinoda, the song is about a broken relationship.

An emotional Anthem that cannot be played live anymore
“Good Goodbye” from the album “One More Light” only reached the charts after Chester Bennington’s death. The song was actually written for a deceased employee of the record label. But after Chester Bennington’s suicide, it became an anthem for him and everyone who has lost someone. Mike Shinoda explained at the time that “Good Goodbye” had become too emotional for live performances. After all, the message of love had actually been intended for those who were grieving. Now they themselves were the ones grieving.

His last Concert with the two final Songs
The last concert with Chester Bennington as Linkin Park’s singer took place on 6 July 2017 in Birmingham. A fan uploaded a recording of the last two songs that Chester sang for his fans to YouTube. Linkin Park played “Papercut” and “Bleed It Out” as encores.

“Chester’s Wall” to undergo permanent Restoration
In memory of Chester Bennington, a benefit concert entitled “Rock für Chester’s Wall” will be held in Hagen, Germany, on 21 March 2026 to raise funds for the preservation of the Chester Bennington memorial in Kaiser-Wilhelm-Park in Essen. The proceeds from ticket sales and other donations will go towards renovating the memorial, which is a meeting place for Linkin Park fans of all ages. The memorial is an old bandstand whose interior walls have been decorated with a large graffiti portrait of Chester Bennington. Known as “Chester’s Wall”, it serves as a meeting place for fans and people dealing with depression. Unfortunately, the weather has taken its toll on the pavilion, but the fans do not want to let it fall into disrepair and want to continue to maintain the memorial.
