Full-size classical, built to last

Soundhole and spruce top detail of the Thomann Classic 4/4

The Thomann Classic 4/4 is a full-size nylon-string classical guitar designed in Europe for students and players picking up the instrument for the first time. The body uses laminated spruce for the top and walnut-stained laminated maple for the back and sides; the neck is walnut-stained maple, and the fingerboard the same. Black top binding and nickel-plated machine heads complete its clean, unfussy aesthetic. The 52mm nut width and 650mm scale length are standard classical dimensions - unchanged from the established format for good reason - and the Classic 4/4 comes with a set of Hannabach 815HT high-tension nylon strings as standard.

Classical dimensions, laminated construction

The Thomann Classic 4/4 guitar's 52mm nut width follows the traditional classical format, providing generous string spacing for fingerstyle playing – narrower necks make clean finger placement harder to learn, and the standard width keeps bad habits from developing early. The 650mm full-size scale is appropriate from around age 13 upward; younger students are better served by a 3/4 or 1/2 size instrument. Nylon strings at high tension produce a warm, soft-attack tone and are considerably easier on the fingertips than steel strings during the early stages of learning - a practical advantage in the first weeks of daily practice - and the guitar's fully laminated construction is more tolerant of sudden changes in temperature and humidity than solid-top instruments typically are.

First guitar or robust backup

The Thomann Classic 4/4 is aimed squarely at students taking up classical or fingerstyle guitar for the first time, and at teachers looking for a reliable, consistent instrument to recommend at an entry price. The laminated build is honest about what it is - the tone will not develop and open up over years of play in the way a solid top can, and experienced players will notice the ceiling. For a first instrument, that trade-off is rational: The priority is an instrument that stays in tune, holds its setup, and survives the learning environment. The classical format has no strap buttons as standard - designed as it is for seated play in the traditional position - though matching strap buttons are available separately (e.g. article no. 213102).

About Thomann string instruments

Thomann-brand instruments, which are exclusively built by renowned manufacturers, now constitute a large part of Thomann’s product range alongside numerous big-name brands. With unbeatable price-performance ratios, Thomann string instruments are the obvious first choice for students and beginners – and others too. The technical features and uncompromising sound quality they offer are usually reserved for much more expensive instruments found in the professional market segment.

Practice, travel, and outdoor use

Its fully laminated construction makes the Thomann Classic 4/4 unusually tolerant of the conditions a beginner's instrument actually encounters: Left out of its case or carried without a gig bag (neither of which are included here), taken on holiday, or stored in a room where temperature and humidity are not always ideal. An instrument that can sit on a stand in the corner of a room and be picked up without unpacking removes a genuine barrier to daily practice. Once a student has progressed to a better instrument, the Classic 4/4 remains useful as a dedicated outdoor or travel guitar - a role where robustness matters more than tonal refinement.

N
Decent sound and built in 2017, but second buy in 2021 is total different story

I paid twice. 2017 is good. 2021 is bad.
2017 (old day story) 5 stars
I have set it up with a cow bone, and Savarez carbon strings, then shared this guitar with my friends.
The built quality of guitar is good, the neck stand straight, no buzz are sounded.
Then the sound quality. It's clean, there are not much harmony on the treble, i love this setting. And the bass is deep enough. For multi-voicing pieces, like playing JS Bach, this guitar sounded accurate and fast response.
But this type of guitar don't sound good in romantic pieces.
Then flamenco test, its quite amazing that when strum on it, it has a sharp punch!! The sound is raw, with deep punchy bass, nail-string percussion in high pitch, and the effect is very suitable for flamenco music.
So from this price range, in normal case, we just consider the built quality. But this guitar sounded well!!!
However, you need to play it loud with carbon strings. Soft strings sound nothing.
2021 (now) 3 stars
This guitar is no longer made in Europe, but in China. I am extremely sad.
Built quality, the fret of this guitar scratched my hand. Fretboard is straight enough to play with but one fret is bouncing out and cause buzz, but I can fix it. The neck is thicker than before which is not easy to barre a F chord, considering the fret will scratched by index finger if i press too hard.
Sound. It is louder than 2017 but noisier. The harmonic is no longer sweet but dirty. 6th string bass is louder but not deeper. This bass is not a good accomplishment for the melody. Strumming sound is no longer punchy or vivid but dull and dirty. Not flamenco style anymore.
Because it sounds dirty, it's no longer good for Bach music.
Now It becomes a piece of standard Chinese OEM guitar, poor hand feel, loud but noisy. Yes it is cheap. But when there are many good choices even here in thomann, you can find better guitars like YAMAHA C40/45(made in Indonesia) in similar price range with better build quality and more decent sound.
Beginners definitely need good guitars because they give up easily. When the guitar scratched their hand, they think that it's their fault. Ask teachers what makes a good one for entry level, they will tell you, built quality come first !!

T
Surprisingly Good!
Tobi1994 14.02.2014
I bought this guitar just to see, how good a such cheap instrument can be.
And i am really surprised! The feeling and the sound are quite well and can easily be compared with models around 200-300 bucks.
But to be honest, that was it, of course no master instrument, but good for beginners!

Good finishing and sound. But, I dont like the way they make fretboard, feels unnatural, and the fret is somehow too sharp in the edge of it.
