Super Versatile Amp

This is the kind of gear that makes a single thought pop into my head: Want!

Not only is it gorgeous to behold, it simply oozes *quality*. It's clear from the moment you lay eyes and hands on the amp this thing was designed and built by people who CARE! The knobs turn with just the right amount of friction in that smooth and reassuring way expensive pots do, and the rounded corners of the wooden box was sanded by a perfectionist who wouldn't stop sanding until he felt he could stake his professional reputation as an anal retentive on it.

People who care less could easily have gotten away with using cheaper parts. The ground lift switch on the back for instance won't be flicked too often. A cheap switch rated to self destruct after 1,000 switching cycles would have been more than enough there. No-one would ever complain anyway.

But that's not how Schertler rolls! Here we get a solidly built metal flip switch that will surely outlive the user.

Without even screwing apart this box, I just *know* every last component inside is a quality one. No-one who cares about the quality of minor details like rubber feet will skimp on the things that matter and use bad capacitors or whatever. It's just not possible.

Sadly this attention to detail shows on the price tag as well. This amp definitely cost more than I had intended to pay at first. But I did get what I paid for!

The visual and tactile impressions of quality are suitably matched by sonic goodness. The amp sounds really good, more akin to a (modest) powered studio monitor than a lowly instrument amp. The 3-band EQ works fine, and acts on well chosen frequencies, but it is rarely even needed - the neutral sound of the amp is pretty much perfect as it is.

This goes both for guitar and microphone. I tried the amp with a Simon&Patrick cedar top dreadnought fitted with a LR Baggs Lyrics pickup (best pickup on the market IMO). A sweet and detailed guitar sound filled my room, well-balanced in all frequencies from top to bottom, with the amp's EQ knobs set on 12 o'clock.

The same was true when I plugged in a true condenser stage vocal microphone, A Sennheiser MKE 4032. The voices of both my wife and I came out sounding warm and silky smooth, with just the right amount of presence, and an airy "professional sounding" top end. The microphone in question has the unusual feature (for a true condenser mic) of being able to run off a battery, but I appreciate that the amp provides phantom power nonetheless - one less battery to worry about!

A short note here though. A more technically adept reviewer found the amp's phantom power voltage isn't 48 V as rated, but only 33 V. Things aren't as standardized as they should be in this business, so most condensers can make do with anything from 22 to 52 V or so, but there ARE a few prima donnas out there who expect their 48 volts to be nothing but 48 volts, or else! Check the specs on your microphone.

I also tried the amp with a Yamaha electric violin, which it handled superbly. Can't say I was surprised at this point. Finally, I gave the little box a challenge - a double bass. It handled that task pretty well too, even if the lowest frequencies were missing. A dedicated bass amp would certainly do a better job, but this one could amplify guitar+vocals+bass in a pinch, for a *small* acoustic gig, within the physical limits of a 6.5 inch speaker of course.

Is there anything less than stellar about this amp? Yes, the internal reverb is exceptionally basic. It sounds about as good as a spring reverb and it has exactly zero parameters to tweak. To me, it just isn't good enough, and I will never use it. That's four good knobs wasted. I'd rather have seen those knobs used for something else, like a frequency sweep for the mid EQ, or why not an input gain control, which is perhaps the greatest omission on the Jam 100. It's not strictly needed, but could have been handy.

This amp may be intended for acoustic guitars, but it is equally suitable for other acoustic instruments, and does a splendid job for vocals as well. It's a wonderful portable "micro-PA" for a singer-guitarist, with an extra channel to spare to plug in an extra guitar or microphone when needed. It also has a balanced XLR output, crucially with a ground lift switch, making it suitable for on-stage monitoring at gigs with a real PA.

Your wallet will hurt a little, but remember the old adage: You'll remember the quality long after you've forgotten the price.

Every acoustic guitar player should own a Schertler amp! The only question is which model suits you best. There are bigger models with more power and features, and there are smaller and simpler ones as well.

There is one caveat though: there are amps out there that have sophisticated effects like chorus and good-sounding reverb, sometimes with stereo speakers and psycho-acoustic trickery that provides a wide stereo sound from a single box. They usually don't sound nearly as good as the Jam 100 without the effect sugar turned on, but if you're the kind of person who loves to "augment" your instrument with digital wizardry, then the Jam 100 isn't even a contender.

But for the player who just wants to hear his instrument and perhaps voice at their best, in full natural glory, Jam 100 is spot on!

Really good acoustic amp

LeeM, 05.04.2015
i wanted this for a couple of jobs, 1. Playing at home in a dead room that seems to suck volume from an acoustic, 2. Using with a looper pedal, 3. Playing small venues.
Firstly quality wise its first rate, can see this being mine for years to come.
Features wise it has everything I needed. I didnt want an acoustic amp thats loaded with effects, as i prefer not to use them with an acoustic guitar, maybe just a bit of reverb. Thats all this has. I prefer outboard effects anyway, that way you can choose what you use. It has 3 input sections, plus a line in for the likes of an ipod. 2 of the inputs are balanced xlr or unbalanced jacks, 1 input is unbalanced jack. This suits me as I play a taylor which has a balanced output and i use a mic too. So its unlikely you will be stuck for inputs if you play alone. Though you easily have enough for say 2 guitars and a mic. If you really wanted more, a small mixer would do it.
Sound wise, its exactly what I wanted, it repoduces the guitar and it sounds like the guitar, only louder! I didnt want an amp that colours the sound.
Ive been finding I set all the tone controls at center and maybe just tweak a bit for the room.
Loudness, its plenty loud. I know when I was buying this i was in two minds if i wanted a higher power one. But this will easily do small venues and keep the sound quality. Ive even messed about with a bass on in and it doesnt break up.
One thing thats not mentioned in the specs, the bigger schertler amps say they have the mounting underneath for a speaker stand. This amp also has it which is very useful.
Well worth every cent on this amp! very happy camper here.
