A real joy for a beginner

It had been a while since I wanted to try and learn to play a kalimba. As a to-be beginner I felt this was my best choice price-wise and this holds true even as we speak.

I love the sound and the resonance chamber, but I'm not particularly happy about the 2 highest notes on each side: they buzz and don't have much sustain.

Another con would be the difficulty to tune it: the hammer system is not that precise, where you end up hammering too little or too much, making tuning a chore.

Apart from that, it is portable and soothing, making it a good companion at night. I am very happy with this exotic instrument and it really is a lot of value for the money. I would recommend it to any beginner.

It sounds OK. I bought 2 of them and one had a buzzing problem on one of the "keys". I had to hammer the note down to 20 cents flat to stop that buzzing. It doesn't sound as loud as I was anticipating but it's OK. Very pleasant sound and a nice job on the resonating chamber. If you put it down and don't hold it in your hands while you play it sounds even louder and brighter, because you leave the wood to resonate freely. A good purchase! Very nice!

I love the TK17-R Kalimba!
Such a calming instrument to play. The tone is held for a surprisingly long time and it plays louder than you'd think - It fills the room!

Pros: Durable, clean tone, intuitive to play.
Cons; Needs tuning as frequently as a guitar - But hey, it's an instrument!

Pro tip; You can use any kind of tuner for it! And you can put a piezo mic inside of it to get a real clean recording of it (Or just use a regular microphone, you do you...)
