Cheap and cheerful

I bought the PercPad for recording drums and percussion for my songs in midi, and it's just fine for that.

I'm always trying to add more human touch to my production - which happens mostly in the computer. Playing drums with drumsticks or hands is an outstanding way to add that extra bit.

The built-in sounds are very limiting so you will not be able to play proper loops but I don't care about this as I record in midi.

I would have preferred USB out over midi out but that's just fine. Also, I had a problem with my DAW recognising the midi-USB interface (Terrasoniq MIDI One) but an older midi-USB interface fixed it so I gather it was the problem of the interface.

When my drummer friend tried it out he said he was happy with the ghost notes the PercPad provided. Although it was not as sensitive as a real drum, after a couple of minutes he could get the hang of it.

So all in all, I can recommend this gear for recording drums in midi.

Fun, playable, but noisy

I liked most things about this unit. It is very responsive, seems sturdy (although a little plasticky), the sounds are nice and the midi function works nicely.

The biggest con is the noise the unit makes when banged on. I used it in a home studio and when I have the unit lying on my studio desk drumming along it feels like I might aswell be drumming on the head of my down stairs neighbour. The unit is so stiff that the vibrations just runs straight through it, perhaps even amplified. So have that in mind.

Does what 's needed (for me)

As I record on Cubase 6, I have lots of percussion sounds. That's the reason why I choose this unit. Via midi I play the rhytms in my songs, and don't have to worry about the sound. As this unit has a zero latency, I can record the playing in real time.

Kind regards
Roger Paul

Great!

It is a very good tool for live shows or just at the studio (recording) nothing really bad about this, but some things to look out for are: the vibration can go through it when you hit it and it can move the pad, secondly, if you hit it it does make a decent noise, Im not saying its bad but it could be improved.

In conclusion, I'd say it does the job well!
