Conclusion: Amazing value for money. Really, if you don't have restriction on size and weight on your purchase decision list, then at this price point this is unbeatable. It sounds good and is very versatile. Actually, I'll revise that, having used it for a little longer - it sounds amazingly good. I can't recommend it enough, really.
General description: it is an imposing combo, quite tall and the same width as my Fender Mustang 3 V2 guitar amplifier. The two channel pre-amplifier section allows for quick tonal changes without an effects pedal, but you do need a footswitch to make the most of it. The voicing control has a noticeable effect: it appears to cut the middle/top and add bass as it is rotated to the right. The graphic EQ is effective. The amplifier is unusual in having only graphic EQ whereas most bass amplifiers have either solely a parametric EQ or a graphic EQ after a parametric EQ. Nonetheless, a good range of tones is achievable. The built in switchable automatic compressor seems to be a soft knee type and works well. There is a limiter, which I have left switched in, but which has not activated at the levels I have been playing at, albeit that I have turned the main output up to maximum without an extension speaker connected and with the compressor active. The combo can and does produce a rather rich bottom end and tight punchy brights. It has the whole set of useful connections; effects send and return, tuner out, the aux input (although this has no volume control and is a little subdued in volume terms), the DI out and the cream on top, the speaker extension socket which allows the output stage to reach its maximum of 300w. I am lucky enough to have a few 1x15 bass cabinets, and parking this amp on top of a 200w 8 ohm unit, also with a Celestion bass driver, turns this unit into a staggeringly good and loud stack. Reason enough on it's own to buy one. Get the combo now, and add another 1x15 to it later when funds are available or the need arises. The build quality appears to be perfectly good.
Now the not very important downsides. The biggest one is the fan noise: 54db. Not deafening, but not whisper quiet either, it's about as loud, constantly, as the fan is on my Trace Eliott AH500 when that is running at maximum. And the HB300B fan runs the whole time, it is not heat switched. It does, however, turn off after around 30 minutes of no input signal when the amplifier switches automatically into standby mode. The amp is a bit of a weighty item, but the two side handles make lugging it about if not a joy then certainly not unpleasant. I'm not sure why it has a horn; unless the switch on my example isn't working, there seems to be no audible difference between having the horn switched in or out. With my active basses the sound is a bit toppy until adjusted with the graphic EQ. It is also not that loud without an extension speaker (with one it's awesome). This is, however, an issue with just about all bass combos, although my Hartke A100 is a little louder at nearly twice the price. A headphone socket would be nice.
