For even more versatility with mic positioning.
It has some decent strenght in it to experiment with other applications when it's not in use.
Now I hung up a laptop plate on a mic. boom arm to angle it in position..it holds up very well. And it stays that way.
But I had the issue of having to go through quite a hussle being able to screw it tight when having found a perfect angle.
This issue has been brought up by several other reviewers as well.
That's not caused by using (or not using) tightening rings, it;s the way this thing is made. It's the 'quirk' it possesses.
So my personal verdict:
Very good clamping power (it holds a tray with a laptop in an angle with confidence, so heavy mikes for sure), but this one needs a build in bottom lock ring, otherwise you're going to hassle to lock the position with every more-than-standard application, like working in tight spaces.
