Doepfer MCV4

Midi-CV / gate interfaceMCV4 is a low-cost MIDI-to-CV interface that allows monophonic synthesizers to be controlled via MIDI.

This interface converts MIDI information into 4 control voltages and one gate. It has an external plug-in power supply. It is important that the first control voltage and the gate are always set to MIDI note events, with the pitch bender being converted to the first CV. The remaining CVs can be used to control further parameters of an older synthesiser in the sequencer, e.g. filter modulations. The 3 control voltages can be controlled via MIDI controllers. The interface receives an adjustable MIDI channel, which means that looping the MIDI signal makes sense.

  • Two jacks for CV1 / 2 and CV3 / 4
  • Jack for Gate / Trigger
  • Learning button with LED for setting the MIDI channel
  • Optical display of the gate / trigger function via LED
  • MIDI-in, MIDI-Thru connection
  • Metal housing
  • Dimensions: 95 x 75 x 35 mm
  • Power connection: 7-12V / 100 mA

Dependable and Solid

I use this unit to trigger sounds on my Roland SH101. The 101 only responds with certain octaves so I'm glad the unit has an LED that lights up when midi notes are sent to it so If I get no response from the synth I can quickly figure out where I've gone wrong.
Set up is very easy. You can change what midi channel the unit responds to by holding down the Gate/Learn button until the LED flashes, send it any midi note on the channel you want it to listen to, the flashing stops and now it only listens to that channel.
It can also do other tricks such as transposing notes but I never had any need for these functions, if you do start experimenting with it settings and get confused, it's very easy to return it to factory settings.

too simple
Matthew N. 02.07.2014
as midi to CV converters go this is the most simplistic and cheapest (well maybe not now) of them all.

its solid and reliable CV out is very stable and accurate (for note pitch) trigger time is very quick in some ways it never lets me down but it doesn't quite cover what can be done with Midi to CV. Firstly you need a dual mono 3.5mm to TRS jack cable to get the CV out (not easy to find) then it needs Midi messages to be set up IE which Midi message you Want to be converted. also 0-5 V Cv output only common but it limiting especially for the control voltages which need to be 0-10v for a full sweep.
