Some cool sounds but there's a couple of issues...
TrEr, 12.10.2018
I was looking for a distortion pedal that wasn't too FUZZ-like in sound. I wanted something more touch sensitive, aggressive and grinding. I listened to some online clips and decided to try the Amptweaker Bass TightDrive JR.

It very soon became apparent that this pedal wasn't designed as a bass pedal from the start. It's more like a guitar pedal that has been tweaked a little to work better for bass. What this means in terms of practical use is that many of the sounds you can get from this pedal doesn't work for bass at all. The added clean blend helps but the majority of the sounds this pedal is capable of just doesn't sound very good for bass. To explain what I mean, think Tubescreamer on bass: mids that are boosted in a way that just doesn't work for bass.

But there ARE settings where the TightDrive sounds GREAT for bass. It just takes a little tweaking to get there and you probably won't find any use for more than about 1/3 of the sounds this pedal can deliver (unless you also happen to be a guitar player).

There's also the slightly annoying issue that if you want to blend in the clean signal with a HIGH level of dist/gain you will struggle to find settings that doesn't boost the output signal considerably. When I say "struggle" I mean that you will have to set the output volume VERY low, in a range where even the slightest touch to the output pot can cause a dramatic change in output volume. Not ideal. The blend function just doesn't work very well in my opinion. It really should be less fiddly to set HIGH gain sounds without boosting the output volume this much. I think the problem is that the clean blend doesn't really BLEND but rather ADDS a low-pass filtered clean signal to the distorted signal so things can get very loud very fast when raising the clean level.

Then there's the position of the blend knob... It can be really hard to reach on a tight pedal board and impossible to actually see it's position.

Talking about hard to reach knobs... The protective "rail" on top of the pedal makes it impossible to "grab" the knobs. Particularly the tone knob in the middle. It may not LOOK that bad but in reality it's VERY annoying. What a stupid design!!!

Another minor annoyance for me is the position of the power input. To be fair, Amptweaker is far from the only pedal manufacturer that uses this position for the power input and I'm sure there are people who, for various reasons, may prefer it this way. For me it causes problems with certain brands of angled jack plugs. I much prefer the "Boss" position of the power input.

I will probably never use this pedal for gigs, which was my intended use. It's too fiddly to set up and the functionality of the blend knob turned out to be a bit of a dealbreaker for me. It's a bit of a shame because the build quality seems very good and suitable for extensive touring.

I will probably use it a bit for recording though. It's always nice to have a wide variety of dirt pedals available in the studio and the TightDrive does have a few very cool sounds when set up right.

Still, I can't really recommend this pedal. It's much too expensive for what it is: a modified guitar pedal that only works for bass on certain settings, needs a bit of care setting up and has very fiddly controls.

And I almost forgot... The included manual is actually for the GUITAR version of the TightDrive and the included 4 years warranty registration is only elligible for German/Austrian citizens.
